Can I change only the keyboard of my MacBook?

Hello,

The keyboard of my Macbook Unibody A1342 is broken, and I want to change it. My question is : Can I change only the keyboard or should I change all the top case ?

Thank you for your help.

Regards

Yeah pull that beast apart get it off however you can , sand down the remaining plastic nubs. Get you a a1278 keyboard pop the black keys off pop the white keys back on glue into place and your in business!

It is doable, I've pulled it apart myself. The keyboard is held in with glue and plastic tabs. These tabs (almost like rivets) will break when removing the keyboard, so you'll need to find a way to re-secure the keyboard. If you're not picky about a potentially "loose" keyboard, you could do replace JUST the keyboard.

also, due to scarcity of the keyboard for the particular model, i found that the keyboard for 2009 a1278 macbook unibody fits just right. costs fraction, too... (at least the UK model)

apart from the ribbon for the powerbutton being traced slightly different way, it is identical.

i know the keyboard is black, for me it doesnt matter.

also, you could use just the traces, if you dont mind a bit of the dirty work.

rivets can be done by heating them and pulling the keyboard up slowly...

just a thought...

Ive done it last week. Had to cut and sand the rivets off but in the end i have got fully working topcase. Its a dirty job, not for faint of heart. Ripping the plate off of the topcase looked more like breaking it, luckily plastic does flex alot. As a adhesive i used epoxy.
