No Bootable Device Found

I have an Acer Aspire V3-371 Series laptop here and it can't boot as it cannot find any Bootable device. I originally tried to reinstall Windows, that didn't work. So I tested the original HDD. It was defect to some degree. So I changed it out for a new one and installed Windows again. The PC worked! But just for a week or so before the exact same problem occurred again... Now I'm out of ideas what it could be.

It sounds like there is a defect in your power supply that is damaging your hard drive. Can you test your other components and see where the problem is coming from. Have you tried posting your question on the official Acer support forums: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/

door

@lukecetion, what do you mean the original HDD was "defect to some degree"? Have you run a recovery disc like http://www.hirensbootcd.org/? Hirens has hard drive diagnostic tools, master boot record tools, antivirus software, etc.

door

Hi @lukecetion ,

Is the HDD being detected in BIOS, you never said?

door

@jayeff Yes, it is being detected.

door

Hi @lukecetion ,

If UEFI is enabled, what options are available in BIOS for the boot sequence?

Don't know your laptop or BIOS but can you add a boot option at all to the list of options?

Perhaps one that shows Win 10 HDD or Win 10 USB for example.

Just a thought.

Other ways:

1. Disconnect all peripherals of USB

In most cases, the issue of no bootable could get caused by the USB devices that you are using. So, the best way to deal with the issue is by disconnecting all the in-use USB peripherals. Also, you need to make sure that you plug out your USB keyboard and mouse as well to get rid of the problem.

2. Check the cables

Moreover, the problem of no bootable device can also get caused by loose cables. So, you need to get the computer sure that you have the wires of your computer tightened when you are dealing with the problem. The first thing you can do is turning off your computer and then checking all the SATA cables and their connection with the hard drive and the motherboard.

3. Set a good hard drive as the first boot device

Because the problem of ‘no bootable device Acer laptop fix’ in Acer might also be the reasons for the faulty hard drive, you need to set the right hard drive.

The steps to set the hard drive are

  • Power off your Acer device by holding the power button for 5 seconds
  • Long press the arrow button and then click the Boot tab.
  • Then, go to the Exit tab in the BIOS utility.
  • Choose the ‘Exit Saving Changes’
  • Then, follow the steps and restart your computer.

And, you will get the desired results.

4. Fix the damaged MBR

MBR is the sector in had which has the information about the load of the OS and the hard disk. The loss in the MBR will lead to bootable problems. Here is the command prompts for the ‘no bootable problem Acer laptop fix.’

  • Bootrec /rebuildbcd
  • Bootrec /scanos
  • Bootrec/ fixboot
  • Bootrec /fixmbr

After you get done with the commands and your problem does not get fixed yet, you should try the following.

  • bcdedit /export C:BCD_Backup
  • c:
  • cd boot
  • attrib bcd -s -h -r
  • ren c:bootbcd bcd.old
  • bootrec /RebuildBcd

Hence you can fix the problem of no bootable device Acer windows 8.

5. Build MBR again without Windows CD

While ‘no bootable device Acer laptop fix’ requires the installation of Windows CD, you can sometimes do it without using CD too. For that, you need to create an environment. To create an environment for MBR, you need to follow these simple steps.

  1. At first, download the freeware and then install it on your computer.
  2. Run AQMEI and then click on the make bootable media wizard.
  3. Then, insert the bootable USB
  4. You’ll see the option to rebuild MBR. Click on it.

some misleading and incomplete info in a few of these replies. here are some important points that need clarifying.

  • SSD stands for Solid State Drive. there are no mechanical movements in these hard drives. Even if they fail, there will never be any clicking sounds, vibrations. Think of it like how a usb flash drive works. they are fast! they tend to be included with higher end systems or as aftermarket upgrades.
  • HDD stands for Hard Disk Drive. these are traditional hard drives with mechanical moving parts. Almost like a high-tech record player; there's a spinning platter that stores the data (the vinyl), and a read/write arm with a magnetic head that access the platter (not unlike the tonearm and cartridge-needle on a record player). More often than not, these are standard with many factory systems. and these make a noticeable sound when they are running (smooth high pitched whirling). if you hear clicking, then your HDD is more than likely toast.
  • my Acer has the “no bootable device” error when booting up. With UEFI (and secure boot) enabled, my computer is ONLY looking for the operating system on the internal HDD (or SSD). it doesn't care if I have a windows repair CD, or USB recovery flash drive plugged in.
  • Disabling UEFI and switching it to Legacy (which also disables secure boot) will allow me to tell the computer to look at other locations when booting up.

To do this on my Acer: (firstly, laptop has to be powered off).

  1. Press and hold F2, then power on laptop. keep holding F2 until the UEFI screen (aka BIOS) pops up.
  2. use arrow keys to navigate to the BOOT tab. Press <enter> on BOOT MODE. Change to LEGACY. (A pop up warning should appear. This is normal. just hit OK). Note that the SECURE BOOT option is no longer there! That's normal as secure boot is a feature available only with UEFI.
  3. use arrow keys and navigate to MAIN tab. Press <enter> on F12 BOOT MENU. Set this to ENABLED (may already be enabled for some of you).
  4. Press F10 to save and exit. System will now reboot using the old school CMOS/BIOS some of us are familiar with. this will give you options to boot from CD ROM, USB, Network etc. this is where a recovery usb or disc or windows installation disc will actually work.
  5. Press and hold F12 as the computer starts to boot. the boot manager should appear showing you all the different options on your system. if you have a USB flash drive, make sure that is plugged in before you reboot otherwise it may not show up in the boot manager. same with DVD or CD ROMS. make sure there's something in there before booting. if it doesn't show up or it wasn't plugged in, just try again by pressing and holding the power button for a few seconds to shut off the laptop. Press and hold F12, then turn on the laptop.
  6. now this is where I'm going to stop because depending on the media you have for recovery, the next steps will vary. Just follow the on-screen instructions for your specific recovery tool. so as previous posts have said, Acer has a recovery creation tool that ideally would have been used when the computer was working. back in the day when computer companies cared about us, they used to send computers with a restore CD or USB. but they don't care anymore. so if you are one of the few people if that had the presents of mind 2 use this tool when everything was hunky-dory, then I'm happy for you. for the 95% of us that didn't, well you could try calling ACER and they can mail you one I think (probably for a fee tho). from another computer (does not have to be an Acer) or you could google Microsoft Windows Media Creation Tool (sometimes referred to as MCT). this will allow you to select the operating system version and make a usb or burn a dvd with a bootable copy of windows. For most of you, this should help you repair your windows installation. For the minority of you (like me) this will determine, in no uncertain terms, that the problem was a hardware fault. (my HDD failed-even though there was no clicking sound, there are a lot of other things that may have gone wrong with it.) Replacing the hard drive with a new one, and repeating the steps using the usb I made with the MCT would have installed Windows on the new HDD. but I chose not to do this. see below.
  7. because I like to think of myself as “cool” I actually installed Ubuntu instead of Windows. (I guess I also have trust issues with Windows lol). basically instead of using the MCT to create a bootable Windows usb, i made an equivalent bootable usb of Linux—Ubuntu. same steps to repair the Windows installation allowed me to install Ubuntu.
  8. once everything is operational again, you just need to go back into the BIOS and reverse the changes previously made. Enable the UEFI option. make sure secure boot is also enabled. You could leave the F12 BOOT MENU enabled or disabled (it won't affect anything).

**an important thing to note is that Acer claims that there is a helpful repair partition for fixing problems with the operating system. while booting up, you're supposed to hold ALT + F10 to bring up this recovery tool. obviously since my hard drive was unreadable, this did not help me one iota. this might help a lot of you though … in the bios it should already be enabled. but if it isn't you'll find it in the same MAIN tab. look for the option called D2D recovery—disk to disk recovery. (I probably should have started this post with that eh lol). once it is enabled, hold down ALT + F10 then turn on the computer.

anyways, good luck y'all!

I just flashed my Bios with an old (2016) insydeH20 bios and that was dumb-got the error “no bootable device”. I replaced the original her with an sdd a year or so back so changed the boot order, didn’t work. Here’s what WILL get you back to bootable.

When restarting hit whatever f (function) button to get to setup start up screen, arrow right to the last screen and change windows boot to LEGACY. Windows 8 and above warning blah blah then save and restart. Got me back to my original sdd/operating programs so I could flash with a more updated Bios firmware.

Been there done that, sometimes when my bettery runs out and the pc shuts down the bios changes the boot option from legacy bios to uefi, but you can go to bios and change it back, it goes both ways, it depends in which of them you have installed the windows because the type of format they use for the hard drive is different..

I took Techblogchain’s advice and changed from UEFI to Legacy. That just made things worse. Could it be that the SSD drive is broke? I can’t tell when all I see a a black screen with :

No bootable device — insert boot disk and press any key

In Legacy BIOS mode it will boot from neither SSD nor HDD. Back to UEFI then.

I changed to Legacy and got the DOS message No Bootable Device - insert boot disc and press any key.

changed it back to UEFI and it worked again for a a few days then same problem. I kept going through the switching between the two to get it working again and that worked 3 or 4 times. I even reset windows to a previous work point (thinking the problem was caused when I removed ACER programs on the laptop). Anyway bad news is, the switching doesn’t seem to get it going now. I feel pretty silly that I didn’t create a bootable USB when i managed to get it working again

Did you transfer all the files including windows itself onto the other hard drive ? If yes the program you used is probably the issue.

Is the SATA cable properly inserted? If there are no clicking sounds coming from the HDD, that could be the problem. Otherwise, if you have an SSD , clicking noises are a horrible sign (I think) , and something is definitely wrong with it.

SSD’s can only last for about a year or two before corrupting. Try a HDD if you’ve had an SSD for a while.

Try downgrading your BIOS or UEFI if you recently updated. This could be another reason for the HDD or SSD failure.

Hi,

It would indeed be a horrible sign if you heard clicking noises from a SSD.

There are no moving parts in a SSD and therefore it operates silently. It is a completely solid state device.

Clicking noises emanating from a HDD could indicate a mechanical drive problem or head problem.

First let the laptop run out of charge and then connect the charger and on it while it is charging and the it will start upadating and then it will start restarting and you are done. This happens because the laptop hasn’t been updated for a long time is which can cause this No booting device .Thanks and don’t forget to update your laptop

I got this problem solved by just going to the BIOS by holding down F2 while booting and resetting the factory default settings.

i had the same problem, i've been using it for years without problems booting into UEFI, but then when i was charging the battery there was a voltage problem at my home, it’s suddenly turned off, and when i turned it on, it became no bootable, i tried all solutions to get it back to boot UEFI, but i can only boot into legacy, there i realized something is wrong with my battery, i tried to replace the battery with a new one and now it can boot through UEFI normally
