Why is my screen nearly black after a drop?

I dropped my tablet on the parking lot from about waist high. It had a pretty good case on it. At first wouldn't turn on but after holding both the home button and power button it came on. The only problem is the screen is dark and you can barely see the apps on it. The brightness button is all the way up. Any suggestions?

Hi Sharon,

It sounds like the backlight, or whatever is powering the backlight, may not be functioning. You can check to see if a display cable came loose by following instructions to get to the cable and finally checking the cables here.

If the connectors are in place, then it can be the display assembly or the logic board (where the connectors are).

Chances are you damaged the LCD, which contains the backlight. iPads are heavy and a drop from that height can inflict a lot of damage and the LCD is actually pretty fragile. The other possibility is that the backlight driver circuit was damaged but the first thing to try is a new LCD.

Unfortunately, replacement screens (the LCD and digitizer are fused together on the Air 2) are hugely expensive right now so I don't recommend you order one just to find out. Your best bet is to bring it to a shop that has one in stock so they can try it.
