I'm sure this is a very simple question and apologies but I cannot find the answer anywhere sorry.
My OH has smashed his screen and intends to change it himself as he has previously changed iphone 5's so he has a rough idea of what he's doing
He has NEVER enabled touch ID and has no intention of ever using so does he need to swap the home button? I cannot find a definite answer.

Only the original home button that came with the phone will maintain TouchID support, so when he replaces the screen, he has two options:
1. Move the original home button from the broken screen to the new screen. This option will retain TouchID functionality, just in case he changes his mind in the future and wants to use TouchID. Also, retaining TouchID will maintain resell value.
2. When purchasing a screen, also purchase a new home button to use. This option is more expensive, and loses TouchID functionality.
Therefore, as long as the original home button still works, moving it to the new screen is the cheapest option and maintains current functionality.

Move the existing Home Button over to the new one...
I had replaced one before, just in case btw, last time has issues that 3rd party touchid home button will refuse to update, etc.
