Why is my microphone not working at all?

My iPhone's microphones stopped working completely, I tried to test it by recording a video and there is no recorded audio from any of the mics. When I tried using voice memos it wouldn't even let me hit the record button as if it can not detect a mic. The speakers do work by the way.

I’ve been talking to Apple Support and they have confirmed this is a software issue (after running diagnostics there’s no hardware problem; with my phone at least). Waiting for Apple to confirm what they propose doing to fix the issue but they have been slow, 11 days and counting. Initially they said I have to buy a new phone!!! For something that is not my fault, rather poor customer service ... This issue occurred with iOS 11.3 as well and seems to only affect certain iPhone 7 models, other models work fine. Odd thing is that 11.3 worked fine on my phone, but 12.1 does not. Also Apple to not offer the option to downgrade to 12.0 that worked perfectly fine on my device. Very frustrating :-/

Hi I have the same problem have you had any more news from apple?

door

I took my phone to apple and they refuse to admit it’s their fault. They kept insisting I dropped my phone and that the update just triggered the issue that was already there. Nothing surprising from apple. I can’t believe they get away with ripping people off this much

door

Same problem after update. I went to Apple store today and they said I have to pay $350 for a replacement phone. Such poor service. They claim it's a hardware issue but clearly if it happens after an update then it's a software issue.

i figured it out just now..don't spend money. it is a software problem.. download ios software from your itunes in pc . then restore it. but before you restore just backup any thing important files from your cp.. hope this help to you..

Apple replaced my 7+ out of warranty due to the 11.3 issue; mine acted like the headphones were plugged in, even when they weren't. It's an issue affecting early build 7 and 7+es. If you go in they will run a diagnostic and it will fail the audio part of it. Bear in mind this issue has only just been recognized by Apple. I didn't even push them to get a replacement since I bought it used and figured I got a bum phone.

yes!! fianlly apple is recognizing that there is an issue

Oh WOW! Thanks for the post! I'm going in today for my appointment. I hope they replace mine, even though my problems are slightly different than yours!

It also depends where you are, Apple has a limited 1 year warranty but in Australia, we have the Australian consumer laws which protect the consumers with certain regulations. Apple provide a 2 year warranty in order to trade in Australia.

its a audio ic problem

I would say it is most likley a problem with the audio IC on the logic board not making sufficent connection to the pads on the logic board. The latter would require microsoldering skills to replace that chip and put the nesecary jumper connections in place to make sure that this does not occour agian.

My local cell repair shop without hesitation said the same thing. The IC chip. It would be about $100 to repair. Much Cheaper than Apples $350 fee. Takes 2-3 weeks, though.

This happened to both my daughter’s and son in law’s iPhone 7 both of which were purchased in September of 2016. With my daughter’s she had a protection plan and her provider replaced it. For my son-in-laws I was advised it would be $315 for the Apple repair. Both were fine at night when they went to bed but in the morning after the forced update the microphone no longer worked. I took it to the Apple store and they advised me it was a hardware failure and that this wasn’t the first time that they had heard this but there was no authorized repair. It seems that there will end up being a class action suit on this eventually. Terrible that Apple has planned obsolescence built into their devices. Had I not already gotten a pretty decent deal on an XS Max, I’m pretty sure I’d never purchase another apple product. The factory reset did not resolve the issue. Apple gave me $175 for the iPhone 7 with the broken microphone.

I waited through 2 additional updates to be released and installed and still my iPhone 7 was not able to make calls or record voice memos.

I am an IT professional so I finally backed up to iTunes and backed up my device to the computer. I wiped the phone, restored backup to the phone and still had same issues.

Went to Apple and after 3 hours of them trying to solve it they replaced the phone but we had to fight them.

If hanging a new charger port doesn't fix it then it's an ic problem, this is common fault on iPhone 7.

I just received a new iphone 7+

I called apple support and after long process of back and forth (it took a week), I received a new phone from an authorized service provider in Vietnam.

They said that it is a factory default problem because of the model month and year that it was manufactured. My phone was the first batch, September 2016.

I hope this helps.

Hello Thomas I have same issue, apple set me up with an appointment with KTC ASP. Any tips, Should i call apple again. I am also currently in vietnam

door

Apple told you to make an appt with KTC ASP? They probably want to get an diagnosis of your phone so that apple can assess the problem.

door

What did you do? Did you get it diagnosis or just called them and picked it up?

door

diagnosis the phone, received a paper report, go back home call apple again, take a picture of the report and submit it to apple (they will tell you where to upload the picture)

Having same problem with microphone all of sudden not working on iPhone 7 after a forced software upgrade. Record button on Voice Memo is greyed out, and camera records video with no audio. And I can hear people on the phone but they cannot hear me.

It’s been a long time and I’m still using this iPhone for various things. I Sure Wish there was a reasonable solution. But…I doubt you’ll find one at this point.

If you do, I’m still watching this.

My phone also had the red button greyed out. Or sometimes it would be red but it never actually recorded anything when I clicked on it.

I was able to temporarily get it to work and apple wouldn't replace my phone under warranty so I had to send it to a mail-in shop that could fix this.

This article had some good suggestions like using bluetooth speakers.

I resisted installing software updates for this reason but had to in order to solve a different issue. Now, no microphone. Grrrr. I’m sure it’s out of warranty now. Will try the software retro download. Thanks for the tips!

I have two Iphone 7’s - One 7s and one 7+. Both of them are having this microphone issue - it started in March after an update -  In my eyes this is a load of crap! When there sales is not what it should be, they roll out software that is not compatible with out of warranty phones and their solution.... buy a new phone :( Isn’t this illegal??

did anyone find a solution? My kids uses my old phone for game only and for last 2days I am having same issue and I am sure my automatic updates are turned off.

door

Hi @Amit Saini - you can try pairing bluetooth headphones to the device as a workaround to the issue. Otherwise, read my recent reply, it can be fixed but it's not a simple solution.

door

tried restarting multiple times and after 6th restart its working...;)

@Cory would AirPods work?

This is a widely known issue with the iPhone 7/7 Plus models, it has to do with the Audio IC which is a chip on the internal logic board that is prone to failure.

The only “fix” would be an experienced technician successfully jumping a pin on the chip using specialized micro-soldering workbench tools. This is not an issue you can throw parts at to repair.

Apple will not acknowledge the issue, but they will treat it as a whole-unit replacement when you bring the device to them. If you have AppleCare+ coverage on your device, you are covered.

I would not take this to a repair shop unless you absolutely trust the technician working on it. One slip-up during a job like this can render the phone completely useless as the tech can break plenty of other fragile components on the board if they are not careful. One workaround to the problem is using bluetooth headphones, if you do not want to spend the money to fix it.

I read it on one of the forum and it was so weird but I gave it a try and after 6th restart and keep retrying, iphone started working. I don’t have the link handy but comment was to restart 5-7 times and keep retrying voice memo app to see if mic working.

I am not sure whats this hack but I hope this is not another way of apple charging their users the repair cost getting repair and behind the scene they are just re starting it multiple times and its controlled through a software..:)

My 7th generation Ipad would not record audio on You Tube after my charging port was replaced after the Anker cable end snapped off in the port.

Taking it back today.

Speaker sound and watching YT videos works fine.

Any idea ideas why ?

door

Hi George, from what I understand the reason your screen recording will not capture the YouTube app's audio stream is because of copyright protection. This is built in to iOS to prevent infringement; I do not think that it is related to your charging port repair. In the future, kindly create a separate question as this was unrelated to the current thread, thank you!
