My Acer Aspire XC-780‘s wifi not working

I have the same computer as my little brother. Just when we got the computers, i realized something weird. His computer’s wifi is running fine. But my wifi runs VERY bad. I can’t install anything, cause it stops just when the download starts, and with some wifi’s i can’t even enter a browser, which my brother can. I need help solving this, cause i can’t use my computer to anything online.

Hi @duckydasher ,

What is the status of the WLAN adapter in Device Manager? Right click on the adapter entry and select Properties > General

What is the make and model number of the WLAN adapter as described in Device Manager?

What is the signal strength indication of your WiFi network as indicated by the OS? Don't know your desktop, but do you need antenna(e) connected for the WiFi? If you have a no - to - low signal, if possible try swapping antenna(e) with your brother's desktop.

Hi @duckydasher ,

Right click on the Windows start button (left side of Task bar) and click on Device Manager.

When Device Manager opens, scroll down to Network Adapters and click on the + symbol to expand the entry list.

Locate the WLAN adapter entry - should either be a Qualcomm or Intel entry.

Let's know if there is a red cross or a yellow exclamation mark against the entry

If there is no crosses or marks right click on the WLAN entry and select Properties,

Check the Device Status in the General Tab.

This is where you could have updated the driver in the Driver tab > Update driver button .

With regard to signal strength. I was hoping that your computer would show WiFi signal strength bars (1 - 5 bars - like on a mobile phone) on the right hand side of the Taskbar indicating the strength of the WiFi signal.

Hi @duckydasher ,

Have you checked the status of the WLAN adapter in Device Manager?

Have you got the latest WLAN drivers, appropriate to your WLAN adapter model installed? (click on driver and then scroll down to find the Wireless LAN (WLAN) driver download)

Since your WiFi connection is not working try connecting via an ethernet cable connection to download the drivers or download them to your brother's computer and then transfer them over using a USB drive.

Hi @duckydasher ,

You could try a reinstall and hope that it solves the problem.

Before you do 2 more things to try if you want to.

1. Start the computer in Safe Mode with Networking and see if it works OK. If it does then it is a 3rd party program that is the cause of the problem.

<<<Be aware that there is no A/V working when doing this so watch what you do online>>>

2. If it works OK in safe mode then the first program to check is your A/V (Anti Virus) and / or Firewall settings to ensure that they aren't blocking anything. Also check that you don't have 2 different A/V running, (go to Control Panel > Security) as they can interfere with each other. Windows Defender is installed by default with Windows and it should be Off if you have installed another A/V but it doesn't hurt to check.

I did step 1, and it worked. I do not have any any settings blocking, and i do only have Avast Antivirus. Is it good enough?

Hi @duckydasher ,

OK.

Look in Task manager to see what programs are loaded at startup.

Right click on the Taskbar and click on task manager > Startup.

Some will be necessary but there may be some 3rd party programs listed as well. Google the names if you aren't sure what they are.

With regards to Avast try turning it off and then check if it is the cause of the problem.

If all works OK you have 2 options.

1. Repair Avast Go to Control Panel > Programs scroll to find Avast right click on the entry click on Change and then Repair and follow the prompts.

2. Uninstall Avast. Follow as per Step 1 but select Uninstall instead. When uninstalled and you want to keep using Avast download a new copy from the Avast website (try Avast Free- you can always upgrade later) and install that and then check if all works OK

BTW Avast is good. I have used it for years with only a few minor problems, not related with viruses but to problems with my browser not working correctly but the repair option usually fixed it. It may be that there was a problem when it was first installed. You can of course always use Windows defender which should turn on if you uninstall Avast. It is also quite good these days and it is free as well.
