Upgrading 2x 1GB to 1x 1GB & 1x2GB: doesn't recognize both modules

Bought this: PC2-5300 2 GB RAM Chip

I've read two conflicting things:

- 2007 Minis can't take more than 3GB Ram (which is why i bought 1x 2GB)

- The RAM chips must be the same for the mini to read them

In comment: Mac mini Model A1176 RAM Replacement

The screenshot shows that the installed 2GB chip is not being

Do I need to a) buy another 2GB chip b) return this purchase?

Let's all back up a minute. First we all need to be on the same page. Your question makes a statement (only 3 GB of RAM Max), that may very well be incorrect according to your exact machine. Let's find out exactly which machine you have then we can know for sure what we are talking about. Please go here and enter your serial number then report back with your findings.

Than k you, we can get on the same page now. That page states a maximum of 4GB of RAM being the max on your machine.

Standard RAM: 1 GB Maximum RAM: 4 GB*

Details: *By default, 1 GB of RAM was installed as two 512 MB modules, no slots free. Apple officially supports 2 GB of RAM, but third-parties have been "unofficially" able to upgrade it to 4 GB of RAM using dual 2 GB memory modules. Please note that some memory in excess of 3 GB cannot be used with 4 GB of RAM installed, so some may prefer to quote an actual maximum of 3 GB of RAM.

Let's start with the 2 GB stick. Use it alone and try it in both slots, rebooting each time and checking to see if it is reading it. This checks both the slots and the stick.

Now, if you have a second 2GB stick, do the same with it.

Great info. Standby for results.

@mayer - This system can physically support two 2 GB modules but! The last 1 GB is not usable as the GPU uses the address lines just above the 3 GB space. So it makes no difference which way you go as the system can only use 3 GB.

@danj I saw that statement. But they went no further and did not explain "some memory". Weak!

This is perfect. Thanks, guys. For some reason, I swapped the modules, and now the system is reading both slots. See updated screenshot in post. Also - just to be crystal clear - buying another 2GB stick would do me zero good, correct?

This series as you have noted can only support up to 3 GB of RAM. The reason of this limitation is the limits of the Core 2 Duo PCH chip can only address 4 GB of RAM. Within the upper 1 GB other things are present which is why physical RAM can't be addressed beyond 3 GB.

OK, from your image we see a 1 GB RAM module and an empty slot, are you unable to get the RAM in that slot to be seen (2 GB)? It might be the RAM module was not fully pressed in or is not the correct one for your system.

You could try taking out the 1 GB module and placing the 2 GB module in its location to see if your slot is bad.

Thanks for a quick response. I've tried swapping the modules in the slots. It now reads the (new) 2GB module in the bottom slot. The top slot contains the 1GB module, but it's not being read. This either suggests that 1) i'm incorrectly installing the module in the top slot (seems unlikely after these attempts) or 2) the two chips are not compatible together... see the updated image in my original post

@jeffbox - No you're not facing a module compatibility issue. You likely have a bad slot or you just didn't get the module fully seated.
