Water-inlet valve

The water-inlet valve lets water enter the machine. If this valve is defective, you need to completely replace it. It's usually located behind the lower access panel on the left or right side. It's the device with the main water line (usually copper) from the house, a rubber tube to the dishwasher, and two wires attached to it.

Float switch

The float switch is a small electrical switch that's located right below the dishwasher "floor." Above the switch, on the inside of the dishwasher, is a plastic cylinder that floats up as water fills the dishwasher. If this switch is defective, or if the plastic float gets caught or trapped in the raised position, the water can't enter the dishwasher. If the float switch is defective, you need to replace it.

For the correct parts please list your model number.

+ mayer is correct, most likely the problem is the water level system (switch/float) or the water inlet solenoid/valve are the problem. However, before replacing anything check to make sure that all the water supply valves are open to the unit (should be under the sink or in the basement). I've seen a number of times where these had malfunctioned (clogged) or that something placed under the sink has turned the valve shut. Also check the screen on the water inlet valve attached to the dishwasher, I've seen them clogged to the point of no water passing through them. Many times it is calcium deposits that cause these valves to malfunction/bind shut and the coil(s) is/are good. In those cases the valve can be disassembled and cleaned with CLR, reassembled and function normally. Prior to disassembling the valve do a continuity test on the valve's coil, it should be close to 0 OHMs. If it is not, it is bad. On most of these you can replace the coil alone without replacing the whole valve.
