Are you trying to restore an older firmware? Such as 4.2? You need to restore the current firmware on the iPad (And other 3rd Generation+) devices, (Apple's way of preventing downgrading) You can download it here and install it by shift-clicking "restore" in iTunes, and selecting the file. Also, if the file you downloaded has a ".zip" extension, do not extract it. Change it to ".ipsw" and iTunes will reconize it.

+ why won't it open the zip?

I believe that the web browser changes the ".ipsw" extension to ".zip" automaticaly. iTunes will not open the .zip file, and extracting it will simply extract the contents of the firmware update file. You actually have to rename the file yourself, for iTunes to accept it.
