iPhone 4 clock losing time

I was asked today about an iPhone 4 (A1332) which seems to have a problem with the real time clock. Now and then it loses maybe half an hour and then recovers the correct time a day or two later. Text messages don't seem to come through when it's in that state.

I suspect it could be a problem with the RTC chip (probably not a separate chip but a function integrated into the processor or one of the peripherals) in which case it's probably not fixable.

Probably the only chance of a fix would be if it's a software problem, so I suggested backing up her data and doing a factory reset. But if the flash memory is getting tired a complete reflash of the kernel would be more likely to do the trick. Not sure how to do that. Ideas? Or other suggestions?

Regards - Philip

@pleriche this "Text messages don't seem to come through when it's in that state" sounds more like a connection issue. Check the antenna cables etc. If not check with a new Sim Card and see if that will help.

Real time clock is a waste of time to diagnose on a old phone. Better yet to get another 2nd hand iPhone 4 rather than try to fix the problem as it would be a lot cheaper and less time spent.

You could try restoring the phone via iTunes but you would need to do a backup first. I doubt it'll help though.
