Can I replace the motherboard with a newer version?

I have a perfectly fine and in beautiful condition, Mid 2009 MacBook Pro with 8GB ram. The OS is not upgradable any longer so I was hoping there was a way for me to purchase a newer model motherboard, snap it in and be able to then upgrade to the newest Mac OS.

Does anyone know if any of the motherboards offered on ifixit.com will work as a direct replacement to the one in my MAC?

thanks

Geoff

I'm afraid you don't have many chances here unfortunately. Newer A1286 machines with i5 or i7 processors don't have compatible logic boards, too many different parts and connectors.

On the other hand if you just need a newer OS and can live with your Mac performance you can have a look at dosdude1.com/highsierra/ for a tweak to allow upgrading on unsupported Macs.

Don't forget the possibility to upgrade the hard drive to an Ssd..it makes a huge difference

Thank you for the info, I'll check out the link and see if I can perform those steps. Also, already have an SSD drive in the unit so it's pretty quick in that respect.

Thanks again.

You got all you need then :) They are still nice Macs and very reliable and with Ram and Ssd upgrades I'm pretty confident you'll have all you need to enjoy a newer Os. Don't worry about the steps to upgrade, just take some time, it's easier done than said.
