Are there different internal hard drive connectors?

just received a Seagate Momentus XT (Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS 500GB) to replace the internal drive. The original is also a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 (ST9200420ASG - 200GB). This is a 2.5 GHz early 2008 core2duo machine.

In order to copy the whole data to the new drive (with CCC), so I tried to use an external case (LaCie Porsche, fw400) equiped with an Hitachi Travelstar.

What was my surprise to discover the hard drive connector is not the same. The Hitachi has a connector with a double row of pins (about 40 I guess), and the new Seagate Momentus XT has flat gold plated connector divided in 2 parts.

I didn't know the connectors had changed. Or are there different kinds of laptop drives, with different connectors. I searched on Seagate's site: there is no mention of connectors on their technical papers for this drive series. Puzzled: what to do?

Second question: I did not open the Macbook pro yet, but what kind of connectors does it have for its hard drive?

Thanks a lot for your help

With the advent of the MacBook line Apple switched from IDE/ATA drives to SATA drives. The SATA are now the industry standard and cost less per Gig. To move data, you'll need an external enclosure or something like a universal adapter such as this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20T...

Thanks for answering.

If I understand correctly, this means the connector with a double row of pins is an IDE/ATA connector? Is that it?

Thanks for helping

You got it. Here's some info on it: http://www.diffen.com/difference/IDE_vs_...

Thanks a lot to take the time and give me this link. Ok now, I guess I'll get one NewerTech Voyager to take care of the bare drives. I was considering them lately. Thanks for confirming!

Cheers
