How can I fix my laptop’s camera?

I haven’t tried my laptop’s camera for over a year and when I tried to use it I got an error message saying something along the lines of, “camera can not be found.” I tried to uninstall the app and reinstall it but it does not show up under devices so I can’t update it or reinstall. I tried clearing everything off the hard drive and reinstalling windows 10, but when it was finished it still shows the same error message when I try to use it.

Hi,

What is the make and model number of the laptop?

What app are you trying to use?

Hi @Warissar Oil,

Are you advertising or asking a question?

If you are asking a question then more details regarding the problem would be a help.

It’s a Toshiba Satellite c55-b5240x and the app is just Microsoft’s web cam app that comes preloaded on the computer

When I go to device manager ‘image devices,’ isn’t listed for some reason. I even opened all the drop down lists from every option under device manager.

Hi @ashleypennybacker,

1. Check that the camera is turned on.

Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera

2. Check the status of the webcam in Device Manager.

In the Search field, type Device Manager.

i. Click or touch the Device Manager application.

ii. Double-click or touch Imaging devices.

iii. Right-click or touch Web Camera.

Check to see if the webcam is listed in the devices and whether it has a red cross or yellow exclamation mark next to it.

If it has a red cross, right click on the webcam entry and then select enable from the options and then check if the webcam now works OK.

If it has a yellow exclamation mark, right click on the entry and select update driver and follow the prompts.

Hi @ashleypennybacker,

Did you check the camera On/Off setting in Settings > Privacy > Camera? You didn't say.

Also just verifying that when in Device Manager did you click on the View tab and enable "show hidden devices".

If yes to the above then check in BIOS whether there is a setting to enable/disable the webcam or not.

(To get into BIOS Hold down the F2 key (BIOS) WHILE pressing the Power key. Don't wait for the splash screen)
