HP Chromebook 14 ak040nr keyboard not working

My keyboard no longer works, but the track pad is still functional. None of the keys work at all. Is there anything that I can do to possibly reset the chromebook? Already completed a power wash and cannot ec reset because power button on keyboard does not work. Any help given would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

It is simpler and easier to replace the keyboard / top cover than to try and repair the keyboard. You can create more problems than what you started with if you try.

Here is a link to the service manual for your laptop.

Scroll to p.24 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove / replace the keyboard / top cover.

On p.23-24 you will see part numbers for the replacement parts. Find the part number appropriate to your model.

Search online using the part number only in the search box to find suppliers of the part, that suits you best.

Hopefully this is of some help.

I work at a school district with about 600 G3 14" Chrome Books that students use daily. I have several students a week come to me with the issue of several keys no longer functioning. If you remove the five rubber pads on the rear bottom of the laptop (two of them being the feet pads) then remove all the bottom screws. Gently separate the keyboard and bottom case. Then I've noticed that the where the keyboard ribbon connects to the motherboard you can see that the ribbon has slipped out just enough to cause issues with the keys working. Reseat the ribbon cable and add an additional piece of tape to hold the ribbon cable in place. Worked every time with no issues, good luck to you.

With Chromebooks compact designs the cables tend to back out so easily. This is especially true in the newer models. I’m a Chromebook tech at a school. We have over 1000+ new devices and this happens daily. I use some anti-static tape to help keep the cables from going anywhere.
