Can you replace just the glass?

I have a mid 2014 macbook pro retina display, and it seems to have a crack in the screen. I can still see my whole screen and it doesnt appear to have an discoloration. Is it possible to replace just the glass? or how do you know if the lcd is messed up as well? I just dont want the crack spreading more.

The retina displays come with the LCD as part of the glass that surrounds the display. You would have to replace the LCD (the part is upwards of $300). A local technician could easily do it for you if you're not up to taking it apart yourself. But you will need several specific tools to even get started. Good luck!

Obviously you have never taken apart a retina display.

I have taken several apart. Mostly Macbook Air's. It's doable (not fun), but doable. The much easier option is just getting the entire display assembly.

@mayer it's much easier than you're thinking. 1 hour tops. I've done MANY (upwards of 25 or 30. It's not that difficult at all.

door

@ubif_jd yep but definitely not hard...about an hour tops. I've done many.

The cover glass is not really removable! The best you can do is replace the LCD panel as you can see here MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown. The problem is getting the part shipped without getting damaged as its size makes it more fragile shipping. Personally I recommend just replacing the full assembly as being easier.

You didn't answer the question. There's a HUGE difference between replacing an LCD assembly, LCD unit, and the glass on a MacBook with a Retina display. The first one, as you say, is easy. The second one very difficult and risky. The third one is practically impossible, unless you have some serious and expensive equipment.

If you can replace the glass only, there a multimillion dollar check with your name all over it and way more business than you can handle.

@barrymanilowa - I think you are confused!

The retina models don't have a separate cover glass the LCD panel is unitized with the cover glass. Here's a good breakdown on the display MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown the older unibodies used a independent cover glass MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008 and Early 2009 Front Display Glass Replacement and LCD panel MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008 and Early 2009 LCD Replacement

iPhone & iPad screens are different as they have a digitizer adhered to the LCD and the newer models have a unitized LCD/digitizer/cover glass sandwich.

Even still! While the panel can be replaced on its own. It's size and fragility make it a hard part to ship without getting damaged in the process. I personallty gave up as it was just getting to costly getting broken or defective LCD panels. I found getting the full assembly was just easier and cheaper for me and my customers!

@danj I believe from his answer he knows well what he is talking about.. assembly easy - lcd panel very difficult - retina screen glass impossible..what's wrong with it ?

door

@arbaman - I guess I read his answer differently than you.

door

@danj Maybe I 'm missing something but the answer seems to agree with yours to me. For one reason or another we all seem to agree that unless you dedicate great resources to the job, replacing the screen assembly by far it is the best option if one wants quality and no headaches.

It seems to me this older question is piling up a bit of confusion, as the original question was if it was possible to replace just the glass and the answer is obviously no, since there is no glass to be replaced, I hope we all agree with that.

That said, I agree with you the retina lcd panel can be and it is replaced by a number of people around the globe. Despite what one thinks or is able to do on his own, it's just about available tools and personal skills, someone has suitable ones while some other don't. Personally I have no troubles replacing Air screen panels, I've done a few close to perfect, but I've seen lots of subpar refurbishments too and my first attempts were just acceptable, with marks and imperfections. Thus I wouldn't recommend anyone a DIY repair. Things get harder with Macbooks and Pros, at least for me.

I also agree with you about shipments, panels were properly protected and so far I never got a single one damaged on the way.

door

@arbaman - Maybe its better now.

I thew out one shipment of four panels as all of them were cracked and chipped. as they just threw them into a box of foam peanuts loosely. I've even used different suppliers with just as bad results, that was three years ago.

door

@danj Well, sorry to hear such bad experience. Even worse for the supplier, I believe. I usually get them from UK and China, so far so good, even occasional suppliers. I make sure to buy escrow, maybe that makes suppliers more careful.
