Chimes into Black Screen

I recently bought a dead 20 inch iMac G5 (with isight). I was told it was an Intel Core Duo 2.16 but have been unable to confirm this. The label underneath says it's a G5 Model A1145. I get a startup chime and 2 of the 4 LED's light up. The screen is black with the fans running heavy. I've pulled the logic board and power supply and all capacitors look fine. It's very clean for it's age. I get no power from the USB ports. Caps Lock and mouse do not light up.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thank you.

LED #3

Indicates that the computer and the video card are communicating. This LED will be ON • when the computer is communicating properly with the video card. If LEDs 1 and 2 are ON and you heard the startup sound, but LED 3 is OFF, then the video card might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

If this were the case, would I get to see the gray apple logo screen? It's pretty spotty, but I do get to that point sometimes and then it freezes.

Also, after unplugging and plugging back in, I can get "Your computer needs to be restarted..." message. Again, pretty spotty on that too. Mostly black screen.

Thank you!

This was a direct quote from Apple on the meaning of the diagnostic LEDs. I don't make this stuff up

What I meant was would the video card be the culprit if I get video every now and then? And any insight to the no power from the usb ports?

Thanks for the reply.

To check the video card, hook it up to an external monitor and see what kind of picture you get. Of course this can be a combination of problems. The no power from the USB ports indicates a bad logic board. If you have another Mac start it up in Target mode via a firewire cable holding down the "T" key and use Disk Utility on the other machine to repair the hard drive.
