Screen replacement 21.5 inch A1418 2017 model

I have a 2017 IMac A1418 with a cracked screen. Everyone says the aftermarket replacement is not out yet. Can I use a 2016 or earlier screen? Or does it have to be 2017?

So does this mean the 2017 can use any of the above? Can I use a 2013 non retina screen in a non retina 2017?

Any iMac 2012 or newer have the glass and display glued together - unlike older models where the glass was held by magnets and easily replaced.

It’s now 7 years after the 2012 model came out and nobody sells just the glass, so they probably won’t due to repair difficulty and low success rate, manufacturing costs, etc.

Your only choice is to replace the whole display which is not cheap, but can be found from the usual online markets for less than what Apple would charge.

Hey BlueSky7

After extensive searching, I've found this:

Hope that's helpful!

Is it the screen that’s cracked, or the glass panel that covers the LCD display?

It’s far more common for the glass to be cracked, because the glass is exposed. It’s possible, but less common for the LCD to be cracked, but since it’s behind the glass, it’s (somewhat) protected from damage.

I suppose it’s possible for both to be cracked, if something was thrown at your iMac with sufficient force (or if your iMac were lying on it’s back, screen up, and something heavy were dropped on it).

But when I’ve serviced iMacs with “cracked screens,” it was always just the glass that was cracked. I’ve never had to replace an iMac LCD display.

Can I get the glass cover by itself?

Does that include Late-2012 and later A1418 models, where the glass is fused to the display? If so, how do you remove the glass without damaging the display, and where can you buy just the replacement glass? Prior to Late-2012, the glass and the screen are separate. Late-2012 and later, they are fused together.

No, @roncemer. What I wrote was only in reference to older Macs, which can be identified easily because they still have optical drives. The glass on those models is held on by magnets.

For the later models, (without optical drives), if the front glass is broken, you're buying a whole new display assembly (glass + LCD). Making the job even less fun is the fact that adhesive strips hold the panel in place, and need to be carefully cut to remove it. Not fun.

I've removed plenty of glass from both types of Mac, but usually to install upgrades, not to fix shattered glass. I honestly don't remember how long it's been since I've seen an iMac with cracked glass, but it's been many years.
