What do I need to remove data from hard drive in dead MBA 2013 13"

I have a MacBook Air 2013 model A1466 EMC 2632. The computer is dead after water spill. I want to retrieve data from hard drive and have removed hard drive. But the first kit I bought doesn't fit together properly.

I bought this and the opening is a bit too small for my hard drive.

This adapter allows you to fit an Apple Blade SSD in a PCIe slot of a Windows system. It won't help you get access to the files as you need a Mac to do that.

JFYI l have done it on windows booting a USB stick with Linux....and it will read any Mac drive..

You still have a problem here even if the OS is Linux and can read the SSD.

You can't access the files which only a Mac app created (stored). Yes, some files are readable like MS Word with MS Windows or OpenOffice.Org in Linux but, you couldn't savage much more. This is were a Mac system is a better direction and in most cases easier for someone to get to and likely want to stick with.

Thankyou for this advice Dan...I have retrieved music and photos from a failed Mac using this method...Apple is basically unix and so is Linux....but maybe later iOS developers are trying to close this loophole.

Sadly Apple uses a custom Blade SSD which does make getting data off a bit harder. Here is the unit I use: OWC Envoy Pro Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 Enclosure - For Apple Flash SSDs (June 2013-Current Mac Models)

It will allow you to connect your blade drive to a second Mac to off load your stuff.

If you look on eBay or Amazon you might find a used one as often people sell them after they've saved their bacon from similar events ;-!

Drop it in this OWC enclosure and plug it into any Mac.

You can help recover your costs by reselling it on eBay.

Easiest way I know is to use hired boot disk...just google hire some boot....download the ISO and USB maker...then run it as first boot on any pc...with the Mac drive on a USB adapter or dock....then select Linux....gparted on the dropdown menu...then drag and drop the files onto a pc that has enough storage space on its own hdd....trying to read a Mac on a pc directly just doesn't work but Linux can read it.

Update (12/18/2017)

That should read hirens...but you can also download a version of Linux and run it off a USB without installing it....then read the Mac drive and save whatever files you need...once saved burn it to disc.

You're assuming the system can be booted with a different OS "The computer is dead after water spill" So whats needed is a physical means to access the drive externally from a second system.
