My 3GS dies at any battery percentage, is it a battery problem?

Hi,

My 1.5 year 3GS, it dies even when the battery is 70% or 80%. Then, I couldn't turn it on unless I use the charger since it says no battery. But when it restarts, the battery indicates 70% though.

Should I replace the battery? Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

Paul

Thanks guys for your help.

I just found out that the problem is not the battery. It is from my carrier Rogers.

The story is that I ordered a new battery from iFixit, installed it and the problem is the same.

Desperately, I decided not to use that iphone, and took out the SIM card. You know what? The problem gets fixed. BTW, I am using a pre-paid card.

Really? thats cool. do mind commenting again if it is still working? Maybe the sim card was shorting out the phone or something like that?

Paul, i would start with the battery. It sounds like it, even when it is odd that it still shows 70% charge. Sometimes it is easier to treat the patient (phone) than the monitor (battery gauge) it is also the easier and most economical fix. Just my 2 cents, good luck.

Thanks, it just died @97% after I did a full charging (I charged extra 2 hours after it said 100%). I think it is the battery problem.

btw, I did a very fresh restore today, so it shouldn't be the issue due to jailbreak or apps.

I agree and do find that the battery replacement is at least a good start. It usually narrows it down without costing an arm and a leg. Good Luck

I had the same problem I after visiting the apple store I was told the problem was a bad battery.

Replace the battery and the iphone will be fine.

Paul,

Did you ever get 3GS working again? You say you didn't use that phone, so can I assume you got a new phone? I just don't quite understand your answer and if you actually found the problem. I've seen a bunch of these threads and so far no one coming forth to say battery replacement works or doesn't work. If you definitively found the issue I'd really appreciate as much detail as you can provide.

his answer says it was the SIM from his network... not the battery.

I tried replacing the SIM today, however the problem persists. I have a replacement battery on the way and will report back if that resolves the issue.

I swapped the battery and that resolved the issue for me. Phone is acting like it's old self again. No random shutdowns at 80% charged. I recommend the battery swap to anyone experiencing this problem. But please watch the how to video and be very careful of connector #3, it's very fragile.

Good luck all, Mike
