To repair or not to repair iPhone 5

I dropped my phone and as I went to pick it up, the screen gradually dimmed. Then it went black. I plugged in the charger to jump start it but the screen did not stay on.

I opened the phone to see the content. The display connectors were loose and so I have reconnected them. I have checked all the connectors inside the phone including the battery's and everything else was intact.

I put the phone together and let it charge for a couple of hours. It still did not work. The phone is now a dud. Shall I attempt to fix it or just destroy the phone?

Any advice?

Thanks.

Cheers Ajeethaa

Update (10/27/2017)

I just could not resist to fix it. New status: Each time I plugged-in the charger, it made the noise it would usually make when an iPhone is plugged-in to charge.

So I am thinking that the phone is alive but the display has gone kaputt.

Anyone concurs?

Based on your diagnosis, it does appear that the problem is with the display assembly. You have already received some good advice from Dennis & SW, even if they are saying different things. Yes, you can fix your iPhone 5 for relatively little but you may also get a much more capable phone for a modest investment, especially if you buy it pre-owned from a trusted source.

Only you can decide what's the best course of action based on where you are and how easily you can get parts or new devices. We often forget on this forum that not everyone is in the US and not everyone has easy access to parts, third-party/Apple service or affordable new devices. Do your due diligence and take the best decision. Keep in mind that chucking devices in the trash just adds to our growing e-waste problem. If you decide to get a new phone, there are lots of people who would be thrilled to get an iPhone 5 nonetheless.

That's why I intend to fix it. I am planning to hand it over to my daughter. I live in Switzerland and so I have access to parts. I will go ahead and fix the display.

Thanks for the words.

Connect it to your pc and check if the itunes opens and recognize your iphone..if it does then you just need a new display assemply which if you dont mindthe quality can find cheap so you wont waste your phone for 20$

I did. It recognised it. However, I could not access the content as my iPhone is passcode locked. But the PC did recognise it.

The iPhone SE is around $200 USD now.

Apple's last version of iOS support for the iPhone 5 is 10.3.2.

I don't think its worth rescuing. Its time to move on.
