Why can I not change the focus/exposure area of any of my kit lenses?

I just recently have been unable to change the focus/exposure area on my D70. I have tried changing lenses and the same problem is present on both - I cannot move the selected auto focus area brackets with the Auto Focus Area Direction pad. I have tried rebooting the camera, changing lenses. The pad does function properly when navigating the menu.

Is there anything simple I can do to regain functionality of the pad?

Having never used this particular button before, I did not know you could lock the focus area selector. I must have inadvertantly bumped the switch that locks the selector pad. After sliding the switch to the dot (not L), I was able to move the selection. DOH!
