flickering monitor iMac early 2006

Hello guys,

I would like to have your help about a problem I’m having with my old imac:

this one

very often when I turn on my imac the screen has these colors (I made a video with EyeTV on for maximum effect).

most of the time, just put on sleep mode the monitor and the screen returns to normal.

Sometimes the opposite happens :at start up all its fine, but if the monitor get in sleep mode the problem come back.

I have a Apple iMac "Core Duo" 2.0 20-Inch model a1174 (no emc on the “foot” )

The front panel has allready been replaced (problem of vertical lines, always after sleep or screen saver ) years ago,but instead of the vertical lines i had this new issue !

I know its an old mac,but I would like to understand what its happening.

Thx for the help and sorry if I made mistakes,English its not my language!

Gianluca

I don't think this has anything to do with the system. Looks like a hardware issue to me. See if you can isolate it by hooking up to an external monitor and see if the problem persists.

This narrows it down. The GPU is good. I don't remember if this machine shares RAM but it costs nothing to test the RAM first. Next the inverter and then the LCD. Maybe Lemrise will chime in on this one. I'll put him in the tags so maybe he will see it.

i made a memory test with an utility called "Rember" and no memory issues were found...waiting for Lemrise i'll look around for some inverter :) thx so much

I had to do some study on this one. Defective CCFL backlight may have the following symptoms:

Screen flashes on red/pink and goes off.

Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.

Picture flickering with dim display.

Picture flickering on and off.

All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp)

has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp. I'm trying to learn more on this. This link sells the backlights and has a guide to do it. These lights are very cheap compared to a new LCD. I'm going to post a question on Meta and see if I can't gather more information on it and maybe try to do a guide. http://www.lcdparts.net

I'd say you got a bad LCD panel or a faulty video cable. You should first try to reseat the video cable both ends and if no result, replace the cable. If it doesn't work find a used working panel on ebay.

Hi Gianluca - since your Mac is acting up more or less at random and works fine otherwise i would try to save your data and do a clean install of the OS.
