This has been a developing issue and there are all kinds of information out there. Unfortunately, a lot of the best info is on specialized discussion groups. So I have created a blog post that summarizes the most current and relevant information and I have been updating it almost daily.

The bottom line right now is that the problem is with aftermarket screens produced with Hancai or Tianma LCD's using the Aichungjia (a Flex/IC manufacturer) "copy" driver appear to be incompatible with iOS 11. This driver is said to be unable to handle the iOS configuration and therefore shutting down and causing the lack of Touch functionality.

The only real, practical solution right now is to either downgrade to iOS 10 while you still can or install an original/OEM grade replacement screen. I'm confident that the aftermarket screen manufacturers will correct this problem moving forward. In the meantime, contact your local repair shop (or vendor if you repaired it yourself) to see if they can offer you a replacement.

For those that are interested, you can click on my profile for a link to my blog.

Update 2017/10/11 - Apple just released iOS version 11.0.3 and it claims to address the Touch Failure on aftermarket screens. For those of you that have been waiting for an official fix, it appears to be here. Make sure to comment below if this update solves your problem.

Update 2017/10/31 - Apple has just released iOS 11.1. Check out the details here.

This is by far not only the best answer but as far as I can search the only answer to the hanging problem. I am downgrading as I write this. I get a feeling that apple will keep including patches that render third party screens unusable. It falls right in line with their "no third party hardware allowed" policy. starting with the home button and a more benign attempt with the lack of headphone jacks and certainly coming to the screens as we see now. Are there any 3rd party screens that will work in the mean time? This is no doubt hitting a great many people and as stated this is the only available proper answer. so many other sites aren't even covering this issue. I have little reason not to believe this was doneon purpose by apple.

door

Thanks @ingozi. Then why don't you upvote it so that it filters to the top of the heap? :>)

The aftermarket screens mostly work based on what I can see and research. Only a specific subset of screens are problematic. But when you consider the tens of millions of people who own iPhone the 6S/7 and a significant portion of those who have had their screens replaced, you can see how even a tiny subset can still be a large quantity.

door

That is not the case on my phone. Everything is OEM, nothing has been taken apart. I think its just iOS 11.

door

Hi Thawng. Yes that is entirely possible. Every major iOS update always brings its lot of surprises. What I refer to in my answer is a very widespread issue. It could have been what's causing your problems but it is also for the benefit of everyone else who reads through this Q&A. Hopefully you will find a solution.

door

One simple suggestion I've read elsewhere. If you have the facebook app installed, uninstall it and see if it resolves the hanging.

What is the use of joining this discussion, if it’s forwarded to Apple then it would serve to a purpose, Apple has also made sure that one cannot Contact them via email, because they couldn’t handle the millions of complaints that people are making about the IOS 11 update, I cannot use my iPad anymore for business purposes because the Keyboard freezing up whilst writing emails, also I have lost the use of 10 apps that I could use before this update. One is Simle voice mail , that I use for business purposes. Also nobody knows when Apple are going to repair this problem, when can we expect a new update? Or is that just wishful thinking, my ipad used to be a useful tool for contacting clients and business related customers, now I have to use my desktop computer to communicate with customers, a very sad ending to once a good product

I'm working on various phones with all the updates (SE,6,6s,7,etc) From what I know there are minimal to no issues with any of the phones that have been updated since. Have you don't any service to your unit prior to the new OS Release?

My best solution for this is to back up your phone and to restore and update it via Itunes.

I only had to do this with one phone, which may have resulted in poor downloading of the new update.

Hope this helps, but let me know if it works.

I am working on a solution to the same issue. i7 plus, ios11. Here’s what I’ve got tried.

Phone had a screen replacement prior.

1) Three different aftermarket LCDs and two OEM. Same issue.

2) Backup and restore(no data restore) to fresh iOS 11. Same issue

3)prox/cam flex replacement x2 + restore. Same issue.

4) downgrade to iOS 10 - so far no freezing but the unit is still at the startup as I’m waiting for the customer to sign into iCloud. I’ll update this afternoon.

Thawng, ios 11.1 beta 2 might fix your screen freezing. I had the same problem with iOS 11.0, 11.0.1, 11.0.2 and 11.0.3. but iOS 11.1 beta 2 fixed my screen from freezing. You have to join the Apple Development team to access beta releases. I read the beta release should be publically available around 10/23-25 if you don't want to run a beta release.

This is what I've done to resolve similar issues.

1) Download the iPhone full update (links are here .

2) launch iTunes and MAKE SURE YOU DO A FULL BACKUP WITH ITUNES.

- make sure no apps are running or updating when doing so

3) Put the iPhone in DFU mode, and when it asks to restore, do not download again on iTunes

4) Go to the screen where it has the recovery button

On Mac, Option+Click the recovery button, and select the firmware from step 1

On PC, SHIFT+Click the recovery button and chose the firmware from step 1

5) Allow the recovery to completely restore the iphone

DO NOT RESTORE from back up yet. Instead set up as new phone

Go through set up on the phone.

6) Now do a restore from the backup from step 2.

7) Go to Settings

- do General --> Reset --> Reset Network Settings, reboot

- do General --> Reset --> Reset All Settings

NOTE - you will then need to put back all your WiFi settings

At this point, you should have a clean issue working phone.

If not, report it to Apple.

I think that it’s extremely convenient for Apple to start having these ‘problems’ when they were releasing iPhone 8. I never had any issues with my 6S Plus and no sooner did I upgrade to 7, did the 11.0.3 update and nothing but problems. I hate my phone which is seriously not good as I run my business with it. But seems if their thinking is that iPhone users will upgrade to iPhone 8, they are sadly mistaken. Apple customers will be lost in droves. I’m thinking Android very soon and forget Apple. Unreal~

Wouldn't let me swipe across on the home screen, touch any icons, or turn the phone off or restart it using the Side Button/Home button. Couldnt answer or see phone calls, messages etc, but only hear the alert tunes. I let the battery drain until fully dead, then when it turned off, i put it back on charge and let it turn back on. I deleted all the apps that are no longer compatible with ios11. There is a noticable improvement in performance and few to none freezes.

You can find a list of incompatible apps in your iphone by going to General - About - Applications. Only if you have incompatible apps, applications options is clickable.

So i guess the whole freezing issue is related to apps compatiblity with ios 11.

Folks, this may be a problem with the CPU types used within families of handsets being slightly incompatible and nothing more. Everybody, please download the app "iPhone battery memory system status monitor". It is a free app that identifies the health, memory available, CPU performance and specific chipset used in your phone. Very handy. Touch the "System" tab at the top. Under the first header "Device" you will see "MODEL", to the right is your CPU part number. The iPhone 6S will have either N71MAP or the N71AP. Only the iphone6s handsets with N71AP appear to have iOS11 lockup problems. My malfunctioning iPhone7 with iOS11 has the D101AP processor. The other processor type in iPhone7 is the D10AP.

Please help to identify if iOS11 is specifically INCOMPATIBLE (at the time of this post) with N71AP (iphone 6) and the D101AP (iphone 7). Even if your phone is working, please indicate your CPU here to see if there is a trend to the actual CPU type being the true culprit! For iPhone7+ users, you will either have the D11AP or D111AP processor. There may be subtle differences between the processors causing this nightmare. All other phones with or without ios11 incompatibility, please report your CPU here as well and whether or not your iOS11 is working to see if there is a pattern.

My 7 kept freezing and I could only get it working again by restoring it. I called Apple to get a replacement and they had me hold the down volume button and the power button to restart it and it worked. I had been holding the home button and power button to no avail. It turns out that since 7 was released the home button is no longer a real button, just a sensor so you have to use the down volume button and power button. I had no idea until now.

change your timezone to cupritino USA and date to 1st December and turn off automatic time zone then go into notifications and turn them all off individually then go into software updates and download & install IOS11.2 this will fix the crashing issue - once your phone finally reboots after installation go back and change your times & date and reactivate your notification settings :) simples )

I'm having similar symptoms and also this all started on 12/02. My iPhone 7 (32 Gb) got stuck after receiving WhatsApp notifications and trying to make a call, I forced a restart and after that the phone got stuck on the boot apple logo.

After this, I was able to put it into DFU mode and in normal restore mode in order to apply the newest firmware at the time, I believe was 11.1.2. Nothing worked, not even going one firmware version down. My device is out of warranty and I don't have AppleCare so I'm stuck with this iBrick.

However yesterday when the 11.2.1 came out, I put the device in DFU mode, installed FW and OMG! the iPhone turned on, however it was laggy, it was as if every popup window made it slower or took time to response, so I did a restart and the stuck in apple logo boot came back. So I redo the steps, plugged iPhone to the computer without the SIM, enter DFU mode, install 11.2.1, wait for iTunes to tell me there was no SIM installed, put back the SIM, closed iTunes, open iTunes and again, the iPhone came back but again with the laggy screens, I had to select almost all the default options in order to avoid pop up windows, and finally was able to see the springboard, since yesterday I've left it plugged but I haven't restarted it, since I'm pretty sure this will cause the boot logo to come back.

The iPhone is functional at certain level, every time you try to volume up or down, it freezes, if you bring up the command center, it freezes up, if you change the light level it freezes up, but just for about 30 seconds, then it does what you asked it to do, even unlocking the phone with TouchID takes time to accomplish, camera does not work at all, but other apps allow me to use them as long as no popup is needed, for example, asking for permission to access my location in maps.

So at this point I'm not sure if this is a SW error or a HW error or both, but what is strange is that I've heard similar cases with this apple boot logo stuck issue, actually yesterday since I was in my local Apple Reseller shop, another guys came with a iPhone 7 Plus with this same issue.

Recommendations? Thoughts? Anything is welcome.

Update (12/20/2017)

I'm still having the same issues, slow responsiveness, any notification window will lock the iPhone and if I reboot it, it get's stuck again in the boot logo and the only way to get it out is doing a DFU restore.

According to a tech guy that repairs iPhones, he still thinks this is a software error that could be fix with an update from Apple, but honestly I don't think so.

Anyway, looks like a new iOS 11.2 has been sent to the developers and I guess we will be seeing an update soon to see if that makes the trick.

Important: Apple has a non-publicized internal replacement program for this issue

As posted above, I began having "Touch Unresponsive" issues immediately after updating to iOS 11.1 on my iPhone 6 Plus with original screen. The phone would be unresponsive to touch for 10-30 seconds and then would suddenly "catch up" even as background functions continued. Putting the phone to sleep and waking would often allow me to get it to start responding again, but only temporarily and not 100% of the time.

What did not work: 1) updating incrementally to 11.2.1 as updates became available. 2) doing a restore from encrypted backup to 11.2.2.

What did work: I made a Genius Bar appointment (Apple Cherry Creek, Denver) and eventually talked to tech Tyler who after running diagnostics told me that:

1. Despite coinciding with the iOS 11 update, it was a hardware issue

2. He had seen the same issue on phones running iOS 10

3. Because my phone was out of warranty, Apple had a replacement policy that would give me a new replacement phone (same model) for the standard screen replacement cost of $149. (And because this would also get me a new battery which I was planning to pay $30 for, my cost was effectively $119. Presumably if you're under warranty your cost will be zero).

There may be other factors going on, perhaps it's a factory installed screen that is having trouble with iOS 1 but either way, I came away with a new replacement phone that worked with a 90-day warranty and a new battery for $149. Since the 6 Plus is still plenty of phone for me and I expect to keep it for at least another year or two, this was far better than paying $800 for a new phone.

Just had my phone completely glitch out and is no longer working. When I tried to reboot the phone, it hung on the apple logo. I tried to restore to 11.0 and nothing. It still hangs. Drove 3 hours to the Apple Store and they had to send my phone off because it was flagged. So, now I am waiting on another phone.

I personally believe that there are some resource management issues with iOS 11, that start translating into hardware issues. I heard a tech today at the Apple Store tell a customer that software issues can only cause software problems, and can't be fixed with hardware replacements. That is not true. It is possible to overuse, or misuseI the hardware resources. For example, it is possible for a user to configure a computer to use a higher level of performance from its processor. This is well known as "Overclocking" the processor. However, that could cause it to fry if you do not have the cooling system in place for that type of performance. So I believe something with iOS 11 is causing a similar issue by misusing the hardware resources. I was having weird issues like my bottom speaker going out, but the earpiece speaker working. However, the glitch that killed my phone was while I was talking. It make very loud noises from the earpiece. Since then, it was lagging and then at reboot, it would not working any longer.

I battled the 30-second black screen constantly after both first and second iOS 11 updates. Hoped the second one would fix it..but no. After updating iTunes, deleting dev apps not compatible with iOS 11, and rebooting dozens of times, I finally gave up trying on my own. I backed up my iPhone 6s Plus to iTunes, and took my phone and MacBook to Apple, (Simply Mac actually), and they did a “reset” and “restore from iTunes backup “.

Fingers crossed..that was just yesterday..but so far no more freezing and black screen.

I am still having issues with my ‘received’ text message bubbles disappearing under the response line, under/behind the keyboard so to speak ..when I type my response, and I can’t pull them back up into the screen. I have to exit messages and go back in. Not as frustrating as the 30-second black screen was however. Maybe NEXT update

Suffered by the same "blackout" issue for both iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 plus, though it happened when I tried to power on the phone and there was no response for less than 1 minute. Fortunately the phone would work again after several trials.

My best guess is some bug of iOS 11 while hoping it would be resolved sooner.

Btw, the iPhone 7 plus frequently sticks on black screen with spinning wheel after upgrade to iOS 11 by OTA. Though these issues are tolerable so far comparing to the effort needed for a complete backup and recovery, which was indicated to be ineffective.

How quickly is quickly? When I first installed 11.0.2 (first version of 11 I installed), something very clearly (in hindsight) got corrupted. I would burn through my battery in an hour or two, and when I left the house/wifi, I discovered that my phone burned through 3.5 GB of data in a few hours (vs. 150 MB of data use in the prior 18 days). Also imessage stopped working, and the hangs were crazy.

Reinstalled 11.0.2 at Apple's direction. (Connected to itunes and held home/power keys until it rebooted and came up with the option to reinstall.)

After reinstall, the experience has been merely bad (occasional freeze/hangs, very slow app launch, etc.), not the ridiculously abysmal it was before. So if your experience sounds close to the former, you might try reinstalling.

Honestly, this whole experience, and the inability to downgrade back to ioS 10 to resolve it, has me seriously debating whether to continue with iphone at all -- and that's with a household that currently has 4 iphones and 5 Macs.

Yes I have the same problem, I have also lost the use of yakit kids. Zoobe and many more apps that worked before this update, absolutely scandalous, in fact I’m thinking of throwing my iPad away, I wouldn’t inflict it on my worst enemy, I am now looking for a pad that works, certainly not an Apple product, unless Apple repairs the damage done by this update, but there’s no indication if Apple are going repair their problems, I’m sure that Apple have lost thousands of dollars and customers due to this stupidity, from a very dissatisfied customer, Thomas Brunner

The problem appears to be isolated to specific hardware versions of phone. My phone was one of the units that worked perfectly with 10.3.3, but locking up on 11.0.3. Because it is one week past warranty, they want me to pay $350 for a swap as they insisted my logic board was bad! I don't think so, it worked FLAWLESSLY for 1 year on iOS10, only at iOS11 did it "break". My iphone7 obviously still works, but hangs when changing between icons/apps and gets stuck in boot loops for hours prior to breaking free and operating again. That being said, I believe the gentleman who made this post could be on to something BIG.

Can any of you phone repair techs out there confirm this statement and know if versions of the iphone7 also use the N71AP chip???:

"My assumption is that iOS 11 doesn't work properly on iPhone 6s with Samsung chip N71AP.

Because there is also another iPhone 6s in my family. That iPhone 6s has TSMC chip (N71MAP). That iPhone 6s has TSMC chip (N71MAP). And that iPhone has no issues with iOS11 at all.

The issue occurs exactly when I open/close different folders. Not in any particular app but exactly in iOS itself when I try to interact with folders on screens.

I've got a 6s with the N71AP CPU. I get false empty battery crashes, every day. The phone usually restarts after connecting to a power source, but if I'm out and about with no access to power, I'm without a phone until I can plug it in. Today, for the second time, it crashed and did not respond when connected to a charger. I connected it to the Mac and still got the dead battery screen. I pressed the home and power buttons, without result. I just pressed the power button and the Apple screen came up revealing that I have a fully charged battery - fat lot of good that's going to do me, when it crashes again.

Are you saying that you first saw the issue after upgrading to ios 11?

There's a known hardware failure that causes battery monitoring to misbehave. My son had that issue a few years back with an iphone 6. Was told that it was on the motherboard, and the motherboard couldn't be replaced on the 6. (Was told the 6s motherboard could be replaced -- which I took to mean that the same hardware failure applied to the 6s, but there was a repair option.)

My 6, and my daughter's 6 both seemed to start misbehaving on battery monitoring after upgrading to ios 10 -- though never got as bad as my son's. I was always suspicious that the new OS had somehow exacerbated the issue, but I presume there actually is an underlying hardware fault.

I'd be suspicious that you actually are seeing a hardware problem, and that noticing it in conjunction with an upgrade is either coincidental, or that something in the new code exacerbated an existing issue (perhaps by speeding battery drain, making it more visible).

The phone was working just fine, until I upgraded to iOS 11 from the lastest version of iOS 10. Since the upgrade to 11, my phone has crashed every day, with false low battery issues. When it restarts - only when on a charger - the battery shows as full or nearly full. Several times, the phone has shown a dead battery after being on the charger, all night and doesn't immediately respond to attempts to reboot it. It has usually restarted, but I'm having that issue, right now and I haven't been able to get it to reboot. its been dead for more than an hour, on the charger, with no change in the charge graphic on the screen. Force reboot has no effect. Had to put the SIM card into my 5s. This phone was eligible for the 6s battery replacement and I took in in to the Apple Store, soon after that program was initiated. Worked fine until iOS 11 update.

The problem with my 6s has reached a conclusion without a solution. I put my crashing 6s into a drawer when my iPhone X arrived on Nov 15. On Nov. 25 - yesterday- I was going to lend the phone to a relative to take photos at a party. The phone had exploded in the drawer. The screen was still attached on two sides but was bowed outward in the middle. It has become detached along two sides from the metal back. I called Apple and, because I participated in the Apple battery replacement program for my batch of 6s, they are going to repair it without charge. Hopefully my ios11 woes will be over.

Hi My name is Dylan and I have had this problem several times with my iPhone 6s 7 plus recently I have not had this problem on my iPhone X Currently I believe this is after market screens that each company claims are apple certified and are from apple and yet they continue to tell me apple is breaking some of the screens so people that reaplace them at after market stores will have to go to apple although I believe the screens are just plain crap now I also believe you should buy apple care and pay the 29 dollars to replace the screen but that’s my opinion and I encourage you to make your own decisions thank you

similar problem since 11.0.0 until now with 11.1.2

screen freezes to touch, but still moves if something is moving on screen - homebutton still works.

Also much weaker wlan signal, sometimes no gps

resetting didn't help, or just for a couple of hours. Same with fixing the ios with reiboot

What helped with the freezing i: use the powerbutton to get in the lock screen, unlock it and see if it moves again, sometimes it needs a couple of tries.

Then doubletap the homebutton and kill every open app if the display is responsive.

After that it works including gps until there are a lot of apps open again

Didn't figured out how to help with the weak wlan, maybe this has been a sideeffect to the "krack" fix

I got my new iPhone 8 64 GB last month and surprisingly shock when it frizzed yesterday. I think because of the app that i have downloaded. My memory is still big. I don't know what happen. I'm running IOS 11.0.3 I don't know if IOS 11 caused my phone to frizzed.

Mike Anaya, my iPhone7 is doing the exact same thing. When it does manage to boot (the logic board gets almost too hot to touch at times) it will randomly freeze. I can play a game for example (once it finally opens) and no problems. Camera does not work, It is black with what appear to be a far left and far right single pixel wide columns that seem to show that part of the image. But usually locks up.

Phone worked fine with 10.3.3. Was not until 11 that these issues appeared.

Now I am using 3rd party software to see if going back to 10.3.3 will help. Otherwise there is something in the logic board. Will followup if success with 10.3.3.

Since this thread has gotten so many views I thought I would share what I ended up doing on my 6+. I had the same issue where the screen would freeze randomly in the home screen. I have lots of free memory. I would reboot every time it would lock up again in either minutes or hours of normal function but in less than a day it would happen again. So I put the phone in DFU mode and wiped the whole thing and downloaded all my apps fresh. And.... It did the same thing.

So, Everytime the phone locked up I left it. No rebooting I just set it down and walked away till it unfroze itself. It took three times and now it has been more than a week with no freezes. Now I am refusing all upgrades. Good luck!

Apple had lied to you like they are lying to the rest of us. I have at least 10 customers at a busy bar with different phones and we all had the screen freeze problem at the same time. Apple is extorting money from us.
