What is the maximum RAM I can install in an iMac12,2?

The iFixit page:

PC3-10600 8 GB RAM Chip

is contradictory.

COMPATIBILITY on the right says "All Mid 2011 27" iMacs"

But on the left it says:

"FEATURES

No, that's not a tpyo! You can have 8 GB in a single RAM chip.

Please Note: the Mid 2010 21.5" iMacs (EMC 2389) & 27" iMacs (EMC 2390) with the Core i3 and the Mid 2011 27" iMacs (EMC 2429) with the Core i5 can only accept up to 4 of the 4 GB chips. These will not work in your machine. "

Which is it?

and What does "EMC 2429" refer to?

and Where can it be found on my iMac?

Here is the Apple T/N that explains how to add RAM in your system: Install memory in an iMac

Now keep in mind the section on the 2011 models was written awhile ago and Apple never certified the system would run more RAM that what they have published here. That’s not to say it won’t work only what they tested upto. Remember the 8 GB modules came out about 2 years later.

As for IFIXIT page notes. This to is an older posting and I suspect IFIXIT wants to stay consistent with what Apple published.

Sometimes there is no firm answer... I know of people doing it and we did a few systems our selves.

We did encounter issues which we discovered was power related and once we used a good UPS it solved it. So this is pushing the boundaries of what the system can handle.

So... You need to deside do I need that much RAM to do what I need to do with this system or do I need to upgrade the system with one that has been certified as being able to support this much RAM as my work demands it.

Maybe you need to just give it a try and make sure the outfit you order the RAM is willing to take it back. Maybe you should just try going with two 8 GB modules to see how that goes first, then try adding the other 16 GB.

I might add you need the newer system firmware in El Capitan or newer.

EMC2429 refers to one of three machines:

http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-loo...

Standard RAM: 4 GB Maximum RAM: 32 GB*

Details: By default, 4 GB of RAM is installed as two 2 GB SO-DIMM modules. Two slots free.

RAM Type: PC3-10600 DDR3 Min. RAM Speed: 1333 MHz

Details: Supports 1333 MHz PC3-10600 DDR3 SO-DIMMs (204-pin).

*Officially, this model supports four 4 GB modules -- one in each slot for a maximum of 16 GB of memory. However, third-parties have discovered that it actually will support 32 GB of memory using four 8 GB modules.
