All of a sudden it shuts down

My 1st gen iPad Air shuts down at indefinite moments and will not open back unless I press simultaneously both the shutdown and the start button. Happens several times, is there something that can be done to fix it?

This could be caused by several different things. Please let us know more about the history of the device.

My initial suspicion would be the battery. The device is now 4 years old and the battery could be at the end of it's life. To be certain, use a battery utility, such as coconutBattery (for Mac) or 3uTools (for Windows). It will tell you what the health of the battery is. Anything less than 70% of design capacity will require replacement.

If the battery is fine, then it would really depend on what the iPad has gone through in the past. Was it dropped or damaged (dented corners), came into contact with water or previously repaired. These can cause logic board issues.

The other thing that I would try is a full DFU Restore. This will completely over-write iOS and all data. It will be factory fresh, so to speak. That would eliminate any potential software/data corruption issues.

Thanks Minho ill take the steps one by one, btw what is a DFU Restore and how is it done?

Regarding the Coconut Battery app, is that supposed to be for iOS9? I can't find it in the App Store!

coconutBattery is an OSX application.

You can find more on DFU here.

Also let me add that it doesn't just shut down, there are times that it closes and the Apple logo turns on and then will reboot. For example in this link

when I try to download the coconutBattery_3.6.3.zip file selecting "open with Viber" it makes my iPad reboot! Can this be explained by someway?

Coconut battery is a Mac OS X application not a mobile app so it runs off a MacBook or iMac.

Battery life app on apple app store runs on iOS which means you can run it off your iPad.

3utools on the other hand is a windows application which you can run off a computer running Windows.

Battery design capacity is close to 90% so i guess it shouldnt be the battery.

There are a few dented corners and yes prolly it has been dropped. So i guess i next step might be the DFU Restore.

Still id like to ask, is it normal when trying to download (the file i noted before) to reboot?

Your battery is fine. You want to look at the design capacity and charge cycles. Your battery can still hold ~93% of it's designed capacity. Anything above ~70% is ok but over 80% is good and over 90% is very good. The number of cycle counts is also important, especially if you buy something used. Anything under 750 - 1000 is good but every battery is different on that count.

So what would be the next step? The DFU restore?
