A friend of mine recently passed away and I have his eMachines desktop. I am trying to do a factory reset but I can't get past the password and I do not know what his password was.. please help

You could do a fresh install, assuming you have the product key.
If it is running windows 7, use this link for instructions: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software...
For windows 10, use this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software...
You'll need another functioning computer to use this. If you don't think you can do this there are other options.

this is the best option.
Running the windows install will give you the option to format your system drive. this will allow you to bypass passwords, by erasing all content. if you dont have the product key, you can purchase one from microsoft as well.
It's the best option but not the easiest.
