iPhone 7 home button not working after disconnecting the battery

Has anyone else seen the iPhone 7 home button stop working after only disconnecting the battery?

At our shop we have been replacing screens on the iPhone 7 since December of last year. We have not had any problems with the home button becoming deactivated after a repair till about a month ago.

We started seeing a few cases where the phone button would not function after putting on the new screen. The phone would either not wake up from a black screen and only recognized it was being pressed when the screen was on. Then after entering the passcode it would not function at all. Sometimes it gives a messaging saying "iPhone home button needs servicing" and automatically activates the assistive touch. In other cases it just says the familiar "unable to active touch ID" like it has with all the older models with touch ID functionality. This may be related to which IOS it is on.

Until a few days ago we assumed it was the screens we were replacing it with since we did not damage the home button in any of the cases. But this week we tested an iphone 7 that someone brought us with a cracked screen. There was no issue with the home button after the screen was cracked and no message saying "iphone home button may need servicing"

All we did was power off the phone and disconnect the battery with the screen flex cables still attached. Then we reconnected it and upon bootup the phone gave the "unable to activate touch ID) message.

This might be a software but with the version of IOS the phone was on, sadly we were unable to check.

@ryanpatrick_22

Have you tested a Hard restart?

(powerbutton and volune down button untill you see Apple logo)

If that dosent change anything open it up again and remove battery from the motherboard and also The screens two contacts and check if you can ser anything damaged, mostly on the homebutton flex (some damages that when opening The screen up)

If you dont see anything on motherboard or flex cables connect back both screen cables and then The battery again and test so they werent a bit lose.

I think it is pretty common for Touch ID to require a power cycle to work. We know that the 7 home button is very sensitive to overtightening the screws at the button plate, and we know that some copy screens have home button flex issues. My guess is that your prior problems were likely the screen like you've concluded, and that this one just needs a power cycle.

What do you mean it needs a power cycle? When the battery got disconnected the home button had no functionality, it had about 40% power when it was reconnected. Do you mean that after it gets recharged it will start working again?

No, I mean a second formal shutdown and restart.

This. I just opened my iPhone 7 because I could feel something with the vibration was not quite right. I have tightened all the screws and suddently my iPhone could not boot up anymore. I have looseened some and now it works - tho the home button now doesn't anymore :/

Hi, I changed upper speaker, and after assembly phone back, my home button is not working. I didnt touch home button, dot touch any screws, but before opening i heated phone by hairfan... maybe it is big mistake send heat to phone. I want to glue make easyier to open... any ideas?

It seems like thetouch button cable is very fragile. You probably broke it :/

There is no way to replace it, I'm afraid - you'll have to replace the whole screen with it and lose the touch capability anyway

Jeff Lauer suggested:

“There is a work around not the best, but it will work.

….. Snipped …..

If your home button is inoperative, you can reboot the phone use your passcode to get access; you can now go to one application only so pick settings.

First got to display and brightness set Auto lock to never

Next in settings select Accessibility then select touch. Now turn on assistive touch and set up 2nd tap for app switcher there is now a new home button on the screen.

To close any application double tap the new home button swipe and close applications

….. Remainer Snipped …..

I did this, but:

1- I didn’t disable Autolock

2- I did ‘Turn on the Assistive Touch”. It is sufficient to get going.

It does add more steps for most operations, but I’d rather do this than caugh up hard-earned cash to Apple.

Hi! I replaced my iPhone 7 battery, and then the home button would not work despite repeat hard boots and reseating the battery, etc. I added the touch accessibility feature, which gives the option to select "home screen" through the touch screen. You're a genius and thank you.

@alvy does touch id work if you press power button first? But not homebutton function? If so it's the ic on the homebutton flex

door

What do you mean by that? I press or hold power button and see if touch id work? No it still doesnt work. I check the home button and it looks fine, I know it works. I thought the problem would be the cables that go through the backlight metal, but I swapped the screen with a different oem but the home button still not working. I also think that maybe because the phone still locked and it requires password before using touch ID, it is not working. Maybe if I unlock it, itll work but i do not know the password. I will ask the owner for it but first I want to know if thats really the case or if anyone here have had that problem

"The phone would not wake up from a black screen and only recognized it was being pressed when the screen was on." (touch id)

Press powerbutton so the screen lights up and tells you to enter pass code then put your finger on it to test touch id. But yeah you need to write in the password the first start.

The ic on the homebutton flex is easy to damage if you put the screews to tight and wouldn't be visible to see, the solder connections under it cracks.

door

@alvy can you send some pictures of the screens backside and inside the housing?

Hi all my phone is i phone 7 , my phone is 1 year and 4 months old so my battery discharge faster, so I order the battery in online and use YouTube to replace by myself. as of my knowledge, I never touch the home button area . but still when I test with new battery, I have the same issue (Unable to active touch ID). I browse lot of website finally I come to know apple software design to lock or deactivate the home button when you open by unauthorized apple store.

My guess is you have unknowingly damaged the flex cable where the plate screws on, they are super easy to tear or just slightly nick. Have you tried a new screen?

I think this issue is most commonly a small tear or Nik in the cables between the phone base and the screen that get torn during movement.

I believe it’s apple writing code into iOS I simply disconnected battery and reconnected and Touch ID no longer working. They suck. Don’t want you repairing a perfectly working phone but rather you purchase a new one. I don’t want hear any cables tore or crimped nothing moved during the battery disconnect Abd Connect. Possible that’s a cause on screen on button replaces but it’s not a satisfactory option for me

I believe its the flex cable on new screens, ive tried 3 different screens and home button still doesn't work, replaced old screen and worked fine, the phone also takes a while to boot with the new screens, assuming this is because its trying to connect with the home button but failing? bought another screen from different company and this worked fine. trying so many different screens can wear out the connector so be careful

Sorry - which bracket is pinching which cable? I'd like to try fixing this on my iPhone7 before I go out and try to find a new home button.
