Are the USB-C ports properly shielded?

My MBP suffers from non-existent WiFi if I plug in my Anker HDMI adapter. After doing some research, USB 3 and up apparently cause too much noise in the 2.4 GHz band. Intel has a white paper on it

I've tried various tin-foil shielding tricks and I'm starting to think the EMC issues are in the MBP. Page 16 of the Intel doc says:

It is critical that the receptacle connector shield be connected to a metal chassis or notebook enclosure through grounding tabs or screws. The receptacle connector should have a back-shield to ensure that the receptacle connector is fully enclosed.

If someone with a torn-down MBP could have a look at the ports and comment on the shielding there, that'd be awesome.

I sold a MBP Retina 15" latest model to a customer and they are suffering from the same exact issue.

I will follow up with what we find out but our initial thought was either software bug or laptop hardware failure that we could possibly warranty from Apple.

Your point of view is interesting. We'll research it.

I think this goes beyond just the 2.4ghz band. I'm experiencing an issue where my Bose QC20 headphones emit a lot of nasty interference when noise cancelling is enabled and my MBP's USB-C supply is connected. It doesn't even have to be connected to the MBP, it just has to be in proximity to it. Literally if I have the cable within ~3 feet of my MBP, I get terrible interference, with the interference getting worse as I move it closer to the MBP. Unplugging the brick stops it immediately.

How's that for "it just works"?

@James Hardwick - That sounds like you got a bad power duckhead or cable. Apple did have a recall on them: Apple AC Wall Plug Adapter Recall Program as well as Apple Recalls Faulty USB-C MacBook Charging Cables

Is this the HDMI adapter you are using? Anker USB-C to HDMI Adapter?

Have you tried any other unit?

Shielding is tricky!

It's not just the computer you need to worry about. There are many places the noise can leak out of. The USB-C connectors bonding to the cable, the cable its self and the bonding at the far end HDMI connector. Don't forget! The HDMI connection side is also exposed! Here the same holds true to the back of the display and then you need to consider the displays shielding and its effective grounding at the outlet. We also forgot about the power side of the MacBook! Is the power adapter effectively grounded at the outlet. Hopefully they share the same outlet as the display.

The problem is you need to create a Faraday Cage that is tight enough the high frequencies don't leak out.

Update (07/29/2017)

Sadly, we don't have a very good set of images of the USB port assembly in the new MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar models. Here's a set of images from the 13" model which is exactly the same design:

I don't see enough here to tell how the connector is mating with the outer shell of the cable end (shield). Clearly the metal case has a tight fit around the connector.

This is the adapter: https://www.anker.com/fr/products/varian...

The adapter itself works fine for its stated purpose, it's just the excess noise on 2.4 GHz band that messes up WiFi, and the problems start as soon as I plug the adapter in, even without attaching any USB devices or the HDMI cable. I can wrap the whole darn thing in three layers of foil and it still messes up WiFi.

Hence the question; I'm interested in the parts I can't see directly. If Apple has skimped on internal shielding, there's gonna be !&&* to pay.

Time to visit the Apple Store!

Bring the adapter a roll of Aluminum foil! You will likely want to get this app installed: WiFi Explorer it will allow you to have a means to measure the effect of the signal interference from the USB-C device.

I would love to see a set of screenshots straight up, with the adapter plugged in with nothing plugged in and then fully covered with foil (make a bag that anchors to the MacBook's case) you'll want to use some tape to make sure the contact is tight.

You should also try a second USB-C HDMI adapter to see if the Anker USB-C device is the issue.

This is what you'll need to do when you get to the Apple Store. I'm sure the guy you meet up with won't get it! If you can make a vid showing your setup at home and then repeat it at the store so you have two vids for the Genius to ship off to Apple HQ with the WiFi Explorer screenshots.

Let us know how it goes - Good Luck!

The Wireless Diagnostics app in macOS can show you much of the same data as WiFi explorer (start it, then choose Performance from the Window menu).

In my case, when I plug the adapter, the noise goes from -100 dBm to -50 dBm. Meanwhile the SNR meter in my phone held right next to the adapter shows absolutely no change in signal quality.

If this is still an issue, have you tried attaching a ferrite core to either the adapter cable or the actual cable itself?

https://www.amazon.com/eBoot-Pieces-Ferr...

door

I'm not sure if a ferrite filter would help here. Higher frequency noise is not effectively filtered. This gets into the effectiveness of the shielding (end to end) and the distances the longer the distance the more leakage.

Same problem here, and wrap it in aluminium foil didn’t changed nothing for me… WiFi always dead…

Who’s adapter and did you talk with the maker?

Apple have designed it to do this when non Apple adapters are used. Nothing to do with shielding. Try an Apple adapter and problem disappears.

Not really. Have the problem with 2.4 interference also in bluetooth, just using the apple original adapter. Read https://support.apple.com/et-ee/HT201163.
