Display shows strange, bright colours - LCD defective?

A few weeks ago the screen of my iPhone 3GS suddenly started to look strange (see picture: http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/2599/...), eventually a backlight problem?

It goes to normal sometimes by blanking the screen and turning it back on using the power switch. At the beginning this worked after a few tries, meanwhile even after 50 times or more it still does not help.

Even if it does work, as soon as the screen gets turned off, eg. during a call, it will show the strange colors when turned back on again.

Does this mean the LCD is defective or could it even be the logic board?

As the "ifixit Display Assembly" will be more than $160 with shipping and taxes I don't really want to just try if a display change helps...

I would be grateful If someone has already experienced the same problem and can tell how it could be fixed.

Thank you for any help!

Hello Ralf,

Did you manage to solve the problem?

My iphone 3GS has started to show the same issue (the defect is very similar with your pictures).

Thanks,

Luiz Papa

Hello Luiz Papa, I got a very cheap (€20) LCD from Amazon Germany (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B002Q55L...) which works great and solved my problem!

Ralf, I believe from your pics (great choice to attach those) that the screen being washed out means one of the pins on connector 1 is not making contact - by experiment it is the one far right top looking at it head on. Dodgy connector or problem with de-serializer on LCD or LCD itself. try to reseat the connector 1 if it doesn't fix it then a new LCD is required. Those are just my 2 cents and I am most certianly not the iPhone Guru on here. good Luck and let us know how it is going...

Triple click the home button and make sure to switch it to white and black off.

Triple clicking the home key worked immediately! kylepolo6, YOU ARE MY HERO!! I can not thank you enough for that information!!! I thought my phone was permanently like this because it changed after a short drop. But every once in a while it would tease me by going normal, giving me hope. It took me a while of searching before finding your post.

How did you know about the triple click and do tou know what caused it to change in the first place?
