Screen brighter in one spot than rest of screen.

The screen on my 3GS has a spot that appears brighter than the rest of the screen. The spot is about 1 in from the top and runs perfectly horizontal. The spot is a rounded rectangle about 3/4 in wide and 1/4 tall. Any idea what would cause this and if it would be covered by warranty?

The screen works fine and brightness and contrast are the same as they've always been except for that one spot.

This is a known problem and Apple should replace it.

Its a dead or frozen pixel or something pressing on the back of the screen. This is a very common defect with the 3g iphone. It is a manufacturer defect, so it is covered under warranty.

When you take it back and they give you a new one, before you leave the store check for:

cracks on the case (most notably around the camera and headphone jack)

Rainbow streaks on the screen

light leak (youll be able to see light in between the bezel and screen)

go to a light website to check for thumbsized dark spots.

dust under the screen

off center screen

check to see if your gps is functional

whatever store you bought it at should replace it

Now that you mention it, my old Polycarbonate MacBook had the same thing. If I closed the MacBook, the spot would line up with the bottom edge of the keyboard. Of course lugging it around campus in a backpack between a couple of textbooks was probably the cause. :P
