Why doesn't my computer read my iPod

I can charge my iPod with wall adapter it plays music already on it, My computer is running windows XP I have the iPod disc and iTunes installed. When I plug my iPod into the computer a box pops up saying "USB Device not Recognized" I have followed the steps rebooting the iPod looking for any issues with my computer restarting the computer and using a different iPod cable. I have other Mp3 players that sync and are read by my computer. So I am wondering if my iPod is broken, are there different steps I can try.

Nina, the error really sounds more like a setup issue than an iPod issue. Try setting the ipod to recovery mode, hole the menu + center buttons until the ipod powers off, then immediately release the menu and hold play + center button until you see a check display on your ipod screen, your ipod is now on recovery mode, open itunes then connect your ipod make sure you have the latest firmware on the ipod, itunes will tell you if you don't, another possibility, try hooking up the ipod to another computer like a friend just to see if itunes recognize it. if it does, means the ipod drivers on your computer have become corrupted in either case doing a restore of the ipod will replace the ipod drivers. Also connect your iPod to your computer directly to the USB that comes of the motherboard. Try not to use a front (desktop PC only)or through a hub. Also check the cable that connects your iPod to the computer. Good Luck and let us know how it is going :)

Thank you for your response. I followed your instructions, and tried them again on another computer. I am still having the same issue "USB Device not Recognized" How would I restore my iPod to factory default if iTunes or the computer won't recognize it? Is there a reset button in the iPod itself? Again thank you so much for your help

Here is the apple solutionhttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320 but basically this is the way you do it :

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.

If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. You are of course right you need iTunes to restore. Try the above first and we'll see what we can do. :)

Nina, try this after you tried the first couple of things. While your iPod is plugged in, uninstall the driver by going to "CONTROL PANEL" then "SYSTEM" then "HARDWARE tab" then "DEVICE MANAGER". Locate the USB Device noted by a "EXCLAMATION POINT" and uninstall. Unplug and then Plug the ipod back into another USB port if available to reinstall, and remember to plug it into a USB port that comes right of the motherboard. That would be a port in the back if you are using a desktop PC....Nina, any pets? Look at your cable and if you can try another cable. Cats love to chew the cords;)let us know how it is progressing :)

nina just a quick question. How many USB devices do you have i.e. keyboard, mouse camera etc. and are you using the back usb? The reason why I ask is because I just read about USB stacks possibly causing this error.

I have 2 cats the wires are not chewed on. I have 8 USB ports and speakers keyboard mouse and scanner are plugged in there is one empty USB on the back of the computer 2 empty on the front and 2 empty on the monitor. I followed the second set of suggestions you posted and I am still having the same issue
