Why can I not run Super Mario sunshine? The disc has no scrates.

I have two copies of Super mario sunshine and a working gamecube. The gamecube can run The Legend Of Zelda Collectors Edition (A bundle of a Windwaker trial, the original Legend of Zelda, a Link to the Past, and a few more). It works perfectly fine on all editions on the bundled disc. When I put in my super mario sunshine disc (either one of two) it plays the Nintendo logo and makes a sound, shows Dolby surround sound or whatever and then says "The disc could not be read..." This happens on both of the discs at the same point and neither have scratches. I don't have any more money for a new gamecube or another super mario sunshine copy. When I earn it, what do I do? I cannot diagnose the problem. I need help diagnosing it and finding the problem.

I have an old wii and all of the discs work. I went and bought mario kart and it says ”unable to read disc”. Can someone help me with this?

I have the exact same issue, same game, same point at which it fails, other games work on the GameCube. Very odd and I’d love if someone had a clue as to why this is happening. Is there a chance it could be a memory card issue? I don’t know what checks the GameCube runs immediately on boot.

GameCubes can be finnicky. Are you able to open it up and do a thorough cleaning? Or possibly just use canned air and blow out the disc drive, and use a microfiber cloth to clean the lens? Can you by any chance test the Super Mario Sunshine discs on another console, such as the Wii or a friend's GC?

Sadly I am the only one of my friends who enjoys old nintendo games. How do you want me to clean it. I will try to do so, but I don't know what to clean. Maybe you can link me to a teardown of it and tell me which labeled parts to clean. Thanks for your help so far!

Has to be a software issue with the disc file system. I can't say that for sure, but you might need new discs.

I already have two though. I don't think a third one would be better. Should I send this gamecube back and get a new one?

If the Cube is playing others, then my best idea of this would be a disk, but if both don't work it seems kinda unlikely that they would both break. It might be a GameGube issue but my knowledge ends here. Sorry I couldn't help more. Good luck!

I've had this problem before (but with ssbm). Usually the problem is simple, the console is overheating & blaming the disc since the heating issue is causing some part in the reading assembly to fail. The best way to fix this is to put the gamecube on a wooden or plastic surface & NOT ON METAL OR OTHER GAME CONSOLES!

Are the games PAL or USA copy’s as the gamecube is region-locked, games that are not from your region won’t work so it might be that, apart from that I can’t think of anything else.

I am experiencing the same exact problem. I found myself with an extra copy of Super Mario Sunshine so figured I would sell one of the two copies I had. Long story short one of the two copies I had was resurfaced (Saw some white paste on the very edge that I had never noticed before). The one that was resurfaced will get all the way to the Dolby Surround Sound logo screen but after that the error message comes up that the, “Game disc can’t be read”. So I tried the second copy of Super Mario Sunshine that wasn’t resurfaced and the game worked fine on my GameCube along with many other games that I tested on my GameCube to make sure my system wasn’t the issue.

However the second copy of Sunshine I had that was resurfaced I took to a local game store to have them test it on their GameCube to see if the resurfaced game was simply trash now or if it could be salvaged. Took the game to the local game store and they tested it on their GameCube and the game worked perfectly fine. They buffed the game and put it back in their system a second time and again the game worked perfectly fine. I took the game home and once again my Gamecube can’t read the game. Why does my Gamecube not read this disc when it reads all others and the game stores GameCube reads it?

Any ideas?
