Touch ID works but home button doesn't

Hello everyone,

recently i changed an iphone 7 screen with a new one. The problem with the new screen is that the touch ID is working but the home button is not. When i "press" the button doesnt do anything. I thought that the flex on the screen it could be faulty. I tried with different screen but the problem stills there. So i decided to put everything back on the old screen which is the original screen. The problem still the same. Does anyone has any idea why this happend? It is very weird. The home button flex is not damaged, i checked it already with microscope. Before of the first changing of the screen the button was working fine.

Thanks in advance.

Had this issue twice - still unable to solve -

door

did you get this sorted ? if so help me please

door

Go to Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> AssistiveTouch

Turn on AssistiveTouch and you will see a button show up on the menu. By default, tapping on this button brings up a small menu with a few different buttons. If you go to the “Customize Top Level Menu” option in the AssistievTouch screen, you can get rid of all the buttons except for the home button. Once you do this, the onscreen button becomes a “home” button

door

Touch ID is working.

Home button function not working.

I did NOT replace the screen. Only thing replaced, charging port/mic ribbon.

Everything else functions properly. No “clicking” of home, no reaction with taptic, does not exit apps or go to Home Screen.

Touch ID reads properly.

I’ve disassembled phone twice, no change. Tried assistive touch trick, no change.

iPhone 7. Updated to 14.7.1.

Sounds like home button was damaged. The silver square part on the home button cable if you are very unlucky if cracked causes this exact issue.

That little square part is called the Turtle IC. It can be replaced using microsoldering techniques in under ten minutes.

Hello everybody

My job is iphone and macbook repair And it happen to me yesterday and there was no solution in internet.

If you didnt repair your home button or screen before, its a software problem.

I had this problem while charging in ios11.

In ios11 we have a new shutdown in setting/general

Its not like holding wake/sleep button and slide to power off.

This problem in ios11 will be fixed just by this way:

Setting-> general-> shutdown-> slide to power off

And turn it on after that.

Its worked for me and one of my costumers.

I realize this post is 2 years old, but omg thank you!! THIS WORKED! My iphone 8 home button stopped clicking and I tried just about every adjustment I could without physically altering my phone before trying this, because it almost seemed to easy to be true lol. Well, it worked! I spent an entire day going crazy over this home button and your solution of just powering it off worked immediately!! THANK YOU! :)

It worked for me too. My case was: I was jogging in the rain and home button stopped responding. Touch ID still worked but the “home” function stopped working when I pressed on it. After drying the device (for a couple of days), the “home” function worked again but the haptic feedback (the fake click) didn’t trigger even after several soft/hard reboots.

After trying the above General->Shutdown trick, the fake click worked again.

Thanks very much! I wonder what other issues this can also fix as it seems so unrelated.

door

Update: After a couple of hours since the fix, the haptic feedback was gone again, along with all vibrate function. Repeating the said fix didn’t do the trick.

door

Still no luck. It does seem like the hardware works but something is preventing it from functioning properly

door

I still need some help. I bought an iPhone 7 couple of weeks ago and I couldn’t feel my home button vibrating or pressing. The Touch ID works and so does the home button functionality. But when I restart my phone the click works but it just goes blank through out the day. I really need help in fixing this please somebody reply with a solution.

Hi Owen, this is exactly the same problem I had (except I didn’t - and never will have the stamina to - bike for 8 hours straight, LOL). see my reply on Kevin’s post.

I’m happy to say that my home button had slowly recovered after more than a week of on-and-off touch-and-go and eventually became fully functional again. the point I wanted to bring here (apart from drying your phone) is you need to do the menu-shutdown trick to see if your home button is back to normal. it seems once the button is detected to have some issue it gets disabled until the phone is restarted in a certain way.

In summary, keep drying your phone, try the menu-shutdown trick every now and then and see if the home comes back. may not work for everyone but can always hope for the best. good luck.

Thanks Mudd! I'll hold of on despairing. I just took the soft case off and it was pretty damp inside (duh...), so I definitely haven't exhausted the "keep drying" advice. I'll update here of (not) any changes.

door

Wonder of wonders, after a week of living non hapticly with the virtual home button I again tried the shutdown solution: Setting-> general-> shutdown->, and it worked!

So now I'm convinced that the problem was moisture related.

Thanks @Muddoeduck for the respons and advice.

Hi Mudd is your problem permanently fix.my phone also get wet in rain and then fingerprint works but clicking won’t but when i do shutdown my phone with this trick overnight and turn on next morning it’s works for sometime and this time it’s work for 1 week so i think it’s permanently fixed but this happen again please tell me can it will be fixed permanently or this happen again and again.i think that is not hardware problem because if it’s hardware problem it’s never work but it’s work for sometime.sorry for bad English and please reply me fast because I am so tensed

Probably damaged the u10 ic chip in the middle of the HB. These suckers are fragile!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJgv6SdN...

Ive tried a few as a test, first batch failed but got better with practise and now successfully been replacing the chips. This is only for the feedback touch element, not the touch id!

Today we encountered this issue as wel..

the finger print / touch id works, but you cannot push the button and minimize an app or go to the home screen.

we replaced the screens 3 times, different screens, we replaced the home button also… You would expect that the button would work and the touch ID won’t…. But after the button replace nothing works..

Only Apple can replace the home button because they need to program it to work with the phone. I've heard they charge $300, but I can't confirm that.

I have the same problem. After biking for 8 hours in the rain yesterday using my iPhone 7 continually (for delivery navigation), this morning the haptics in the home button didn’t work. I tried again and it worked, but since then no go. Neither several hard restarts nor restarting a few times in General work either.

I’m forced to use the virtual home button. Touch ID does work though, as well as manual ID.

Another detail that may be interesting is that the phone was charging from a power pack more or less the whole time yesterday (since the battery isn’t what it used to be). Temperature about 6 C.

From what I’ve read today on the internet, rain/water may be an issue in this problem.

The only other thing I know of to try is OS upgrade. I have iOS 12.4.1 installed. 13.1.2 is available but I’m going to wait a while until Apple stops pumping out bug fix versions.

Haptics working again after a week, as I wrote in a respons to Mudds comment to me.

What seemed to work for me was letting the phone dry out combined with the Setting-> general-> shutdown-> slide to power off trick that Kevin and Mudd recommend.

When I removed the phone case the next day there was still som water in it under the phone. So next time I work in the rain, I'll make sure to take the phone out of the case afterwards and dry everything off.

Removing battery doesn’t work. But removing the upper flex cable - for speaker , proximity sensor etc - the home button has started to work. I have replaced the whole flex cable recently , what can be wrong with it?

Additional note: the proximity sensor did not work well with the new cable, but didn’t care that much , I thought it was just not well placed into its hole. But maybe this is the part guilty for the home button issues?

door

One more comment. The reason I had to replace the original upper flex cable was that some weeks after an lcd replacement the phone couldn’t boot anymore. Without the cable attached it could. After I replaced with a new upper flex cable it worked well until now, a couple of weeks. Everything was fine until now , except as I wrote , the proximity sensor didn’t work

I got the same issue on my iphone 7 plus : Touch id works but not home button

There were no sound as well.

This happens after a screen changing.

The correct solution for me was the note on step 28 of the iphone tutorial for front camera changing : iPhone 7 Plus Front Camera and Sensor Cable Replacement

“When reassembling, verify the tape is in place, or else cover the contacts on the back of the cable with an appropriate tape, such as Kapton tape.”

Hope it can help,

I was having this issue as well with an iPhone 7 plus. Touch ID would work but the home button would not after you got into the phone. I simply heated up the button on my heat pad pushed down on that chip everyone is talking about held it there for about 5 minutes at 190° reconnected the home button to the screen and it worked. I hope this helps somebody

Same problem, Touch ID working but not home/haptic feedback.

Got the sensor out and used a heat gun at both sides for 10 sec.

Then I realized that the screw to the left of the speaker wasn’t there. (not holding the speaker).

Got a screw in and suddenly everything works!

My guess is the screw fixing the groundplane to the homebutton.
