Trackpad is not always responding to mechanic click.

So without any apparent reason my trackpad is not reacting to mechanic clicks anymore. Only when the button is pressed for a longer time it registers.Sometimes it registers a click even though none occurred. All the other functions of the trackpad are still working properly.

You might want to check your battery, often problems with the keyboard & trackpad are due to the swelling of a battery pressing up onto the connections and/or warp the frame causing the click plate not to work.

I would give this gem of an app a try: CoconutBattery It can help you see how old your battery is and if its degraded.

Here's the IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Trackpad Replacement If the battery is good see if you can adjust the click plate adjustment screw with you can see in Step13, it's the Torx screw on the bottom edge in the middle triangle frame tab. Don't do to far as the screw will come out. Try one rotation out.

Over time, dust and other debris can clog inside the mechanism and prevent the trackpad from working properly. Also, there is a Torx t6 screw positoned under the trackpad button that can be adjusted. Disassemble the trackpad using this guide, clean everything out and reassemble after aligning the trackpad properly:
