Can I build in a Topcase from later Models?

Hello there,

The keyboard of my macbook air 13 Mid 2012 has died,

I'm trying to find out if I could use a Topcase from later Models, such as 2013, 2014 to pair with the Macbook Air Mid 2012?

What do you think?

Thanks heaps in advance.

How about just replacing the keyboard sub assembly alone, follow this IFIXIT guide to get to it: MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012 Upper Case Replacement. The hardest part is pulling out the battery. Use some ethanol to loosen the adhesive and carefully slide a plastic spatula under it to lift it out.

Here's a listing of keyboards from eBay: MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012 Keyboards

You may want to just go to an Apple Store and have them do it for the bench fee plus parts.

A small electric screwdriver really helps speed this replacement.

As the linked guide says, the MacBook Air battery is held in with five Torx screws (in two sizes); there's no adhesive involved. The speakers at the left and right side of the upper case are held in with adhesive; alcohol and a spatula might be useful in getting those out, although you want to be careful not to get any liquid on the speakers' diaphragms. It's a hassle to get those speakers out; a lot of used upper case assemblies are sold with the speakers included - partly for the buyer's convenience, and partly so the seller doesn't have to pull them out.

The laptops whose batteries are epoxied to the upper case are the MacBook Pro Retinas. That glue is an absolute bear to break.

@adlerpe - When I wrote this I could have sworn it was a retina model. Your right of course the airs don't use glue.

Yes @danj, you are referring to the Retina models. The MacBook Air's only challenges are 1/clean pull all the rivets and 2/replace them with ~80 screws. But perfectly doable otherwise at a fraction of the cost of a new top case.

Also must be sure that it is indeed the keyboard which is bad, not the trackpad or the interconnect flat cables.

Yes, I know ;-} @rany

I might have been working on neat the same time as I was posting so I linked the two in my head, Opps!

I'm only human, I do flub up once and a while.
