gives flashing question mark icon error

My macbook air (mid 2011 ) gives flashing question mark icon error. (Sorry my bad Eng.)

I got flashing question mark in folder icon error when I want to turn on it and no apple icon appeared (white screen). Then I shut down and press again power button, sometimes it turns on and sometimes it doesnt. For example, it doesnt turn on 30 minutes and I got flashing question error. If it turns on, I can restart and turn on every time– no problem. But if I shut down it normally at OS, cycle start and sometimes it turns on and sometimes it doesnt. I must shut down it because I work freelance sometimes in office sometimes in home.

Also, my battery is dead and my macbook air only works max. 10 minutes with only battery / no charge. And it gave "service the battery" message.

What will be the problem? Can it be wire connection problem or battery problem? I read some blogs that it may be occurred because of wire connection problem. They suggest that open your macbook's screws and control the wire connections.

Note: -I checked the driver error at disk utility , no problem.

Thanks,

Serkan

Sounds like your operating system install is corrupt. Try booting into recovery mode by following this guide. If you restore it ALL OF YOUR DATA WILL BE GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO make sure yu save anything you would wanna keep first and then procede. I dont think the battery would be the issue because that would be strange but if you want to be sure, take the bottom pannel and using either your finger or a PLASTIC pry tool or spudger, disconnct the battery. If it stops doing that then thats the problem which would be a strange one. If it continues try what i said above and that should resolve it. If it doesnt let me know and i can further help you trouble shoot this.

Hope this helps and good luck fixing!

Dear Cameron,

Thank you for your answer.

This problem has been continued about 1 year and in this period I updated MacOS minimum two times from official software updates. I think if the problem was occured from OS, then it didn't continue after these updates. Am I right, what you think?

Because of this, I think this problem is occurred from cable. In addition sometimes I pressed back side of MAC while starting and MAC opens correctly :).

Thanks

Serkan

Replace the battery and your restart problems will probably go away. Here's how:

MacBook Air 13" Mid 2011 Vervanging van de batterij [gekoppeld product ontbreekt of is uitgeschakeld: IF188-070]

The flashing question mark means it can't find a valid operating system,. After you replace the battery, restart holding down the option key, select the repair partition and run Disk Utilities. That Failing you may have to do an internet reinstall of the system or a restore.

UPDATE

I would also try unplugging the battery then reseat the SSD. MacBook Air 13" Mid 2011 Solid-State Drive Replacement

Thank you Mayer,

I can open my mac after several trials every morning and I don't close all day while going to home. The trials mostly 5-6 times - when I don't see mac icon in 10 seconds, I press and hold power key until close. These trials continue while OS open.

If I restart when the OS works, then Mac open in the first trial.

The problem is when I shut down MAC and try to open it after the morning day, I get flashing error.

Then I was starting to trials to open OS. I found a way to open small trials. That is press front and back side of the MAC and mostly near the O and L keys, then OS open more quickly - max. 10 minutes and 10 trials.

* I can not use sleep option. Because when I select sleep option, OS doesn't open correctly - something works but not correctly - like freeze and overload.

I think my problem can be;

1- Mostly, cable problem (I read similar problem solving one of the page in this forum )

2- Battery problem (My battery died since 1 year and it can work only 10 minutes only in battery using)

3- OS problem (I think this is not my solution, because I updated MacOS minimum two times from official software updates since 1 year)

What is your strong advise to solve this problem, @mayer @cam2363 ?

Thanks,

Serkan

Like I said, replace the battery first and then see if the issue persists.

It is most likely a hard drive cable issue than a battery issue. And you say that when you press the back of your mac it start correctly. Open it and my guess is that pressure you put on the body is on that cable. With time the thin insulation get deffective.

Check that ;)
