Won't turn on but battery charged.

Macbook pro 13" mid 2014 won't turn on but the battery indicator light on Magsafe shows orange. So I let it charge all night and now it shows green. Does that mean the logic board is still working? If so what would be the issue?

More over, when I press Shift, Control, Option and power button while charging, Magsafe turns green for 2 seconds and turn amber again. Which usually means the reset works. So the power button seems to work as well.

Any idea how to fix it? Won't turn on, no startup chime, and no light at all.

I have the same problem but I didn't spill liquid on it. I was just using and left it for awhile. When I came back, it was turned off and I cannot turn it back on but it's charging.

Cassandra - in your case, check the monitor cable. I had another one that had the same issue. Try plugging it into external monitor using HDMI cable. And can you hear power on chime at the beginning. If that is the case that's definitely the LCD cable. there are numbers of videos that shows how to replace it on youtube. Hope that's help. And as for my issue. I still have the laptop thinking of selling it AS IS.

Mine did this recently after spending some time in the tropics. Shift, Control, Option and power button worked fine but it would not power on whatever i tried. Then I left it sitting for a week or so, opened the lid, pushed the power button and was greeted by the start up chime.... Not very confidence inspireing.

Did you find a solution?

door

I have found a solution, i have the same problem and i also tried Shift, Control, Option and power button while charging, Magsafe turns green for 2 seconds and turn amber again and press the power button again but nothing works, out of my frustration i tried it again and pressed the power button repeatedly and i was just shocked that it turn on and it was actually at 100 percent battery.

There are 5 different power states of a MacBook Pro, and different circuits on the motherboard are responsible for these different circuits. The battery definitely seems to be charging (since the light changes colour), and the SMC and associated circuits seem to be functional since the SMC reset is working. So, the G3H and S5 circuit which are the "shut down" states work fine. That means that there is most likely an issue with an S3 (sleep) of S0 (full on) circuit of the motherboard. Have you spilled liquid on your computer? If so, remove the logic board and clean with 99% isopropanol.

The power button is not the issue here as this logic board turns on when the charger is connected automatically when the board is working properly, so no need to use the power-on or jump start pads. A bad battery will never be the the cause of a board not booting. I don't know what Shawn is talking about - there are definitely no "pressure sensors" on the board that requires the bottom case to be seated for the board to turn on. The board should turn on even if it's out of the laptop with nothing but the charger connected.

Sorry for the late reply. I'll be sure to try that. Yeah laptop has liquid damage. And I'll be sure to post the result later on. Thanks.

OK I did what you told me and still nothing. Even cleaned the I/O board coz i saw water residue on it as well. But still nothing. Any idea?

door

Unfortunately you will need logic board repair if this is the case. The liquid that you spilled on it had corroded or damaged the motherboard to the point that it needs to be replaced.

door

@sololay have you tried plugging the charger in with everything disconnected except the charger port and fan? If you have, and it doesn't boot once the charger is plugged in, it will definitely be an issue with the logic board. You can either replace it, repair it (if you have experience and tools to do this) or send it somewhere to repair/replace it.

door

Also Sam, the board will only turn on when the charger is plugged in, if the battery is either disconnected or has just been reconnected. It will not turn itself on if the battery has been left connected after 1 boot. Also, a bad battery can definitely prevent it from booting, so always disconnect it when troubleshooting. It can also trigger a battery sensor on the board which will stop it booting at all, or will cause it to turn off when it boots. Something to keep in mind for future :)

I had a similar issue with a MacBook Pro 13 A1278. Would not power on. Pressing Shift, Control, Option and power button did nothing. Disconnecting the battery and then connecting the power lead would instantly turn the laptop on without pressing the power button. I could then re-connect the battery and disconnect the power lead and it would contine to work. But if I shutdown the macbook it would not restart without disconnecting the battery and then repeating the same process. I eventually tracked it down to a faulty keyboard. It’s worth noting that the power button is part of the keyboard! After replacing the keyboard which required dissmantling the macbook (not as bad as it sounds if your handy with a screwdriver) and then removing a further 51 screws required just to replace the keyboard. There a plenty of good quality videos on YouTube showing how to.

Now everything is working perfectly :)

This worked for me as well! Thank you very much I was freaking out. I must need a new keyboard which is no surprise, several buttons have stopped working since it got a little wet last year. I will add to this that after disconnecting the battery, starting up and reconnecting it did not seem to be charging the battery so I tried restarting and it seems all good now.

Already had evidence of keyboard issue on numbers, but still rebooted following full power off. After purchasing a new keyboard, yet to be installed it would not boot without disconnecting the battery to reset bios. Battery showed charge but need to update every time that action was repeated.

Any thought on it maybe a bios?/ logic board problem?

Seeking advice before a complete tear down.

I've found that 2013 and later MacBook Pros that charge but won't boot actually have a bad battery. The battery fails in a way that keeps the system from turning on, making it seem like a bad logic board. I have run into this over a dozen times on the 2013 and later MBP. Get a new battery.

I unplugged the battery to see if that was the case. It wouldn't power up with the battery disconnected and the adapter plugged in (case snapped on). Any thoughts?

I know this sounds ridiculous.

Take a Hair Dryer and slightly heat up your mac on the back and on the keyboard. you can also do it on the top. Make sure you heat it evenly and not overdo it and cause any plastic to melt.

IT WORKS !!! at least for me :P

I have had this issue couple of times and I always thought that there could be a problem with the logicboard. I had sent it to repair a few times and had no solution but it would magically turn back on after a few days in my cupboard.

I finally realized that my Macbook Pro mid 2015 13inch Retina display was getting extremely cold due to my AC or the weather. Hence I got this Idea of heating it up. I observed this happening in extremely humid weather as well. I don’t know whats the logic behind this but the MacBook has to be kept inside a bag or somewhere that is warm enough when not under use or unplugged.

I hope it works for you guys as well.

Have the same problem. Only Hair Dryer helps.

For those who think this is crazy. I actually have the same problem as described in the main post here. I've tried everything (except opening/repairing) my MacBook Pro. And I've also discovered that every time I heat it up with a hair dryer for 1 or 2 minutes, it boots up again. I don't understand why, though...

This can be a few different things. Power button is bad or its possible that you have a bad motherboard.

Hi,

When did this happen? Have you ever had any other issues with this laptop?

Try removing the battery and powering it on to see if it will come on. Sometimes when a battery is faulty it will cause the laptop not to come on.

door

I just did and still wouldn't turn on. Do you know where is the jump start pad on this laptop model?

door

Remove the back plate and verify that all springs or pressure sensors are not damaged. If the back plate doesn't fully engage all the sensors that will also cause the issue

I’ve had this problem too. This is what worked for me:

Unplug and plug back the battery. Plug the mac to your charger. I did that twice so far (as at the time of writing this response) and it starts.

Hope it helps.

NOTE: My battery wasn’t faulty when last I used it, but now the system is showing a message that ‘'No Batteries Available’’

Try:

  1. Unplug ALL external connectors from your Macbook (MagSafe, Mouse, Keyboard, etc.)
  2. Hold Shift+Ctrl+Option+Power for 10-12 seconds
  3. Let go of the keys and plug in your MagSafe (or what you use to charge)
  4. Boot Up your Macbook like normal
  5. (P.S. Do not expect a startup chime or a bootup screen, and the battery icon on the top right will become empty again)
