iMac Freezing During Re-installation of OS X

iMAC 8. 1 Early 2008

My iMAC 8.1 had started freezing up. I was running Leopard 10.5, ordered and installed Snow Leopard 10.6. Then proceeded to do the additional updates - after each update the machine would freeze at the end of the update. Would have to reboot. Once the machine was up and running , I would check what was the version of the OS - and it would show that the update was successful.

After the updates the machine would still freeze and would have to reboot. I upgraded the memory to 4GB and replaced the harddrive with a 1TB SATA drive. I used the Snow Leopard disk and successfully installed the OS. But, during the account creation process the machine still freezes.

What other hardware issue do I need to investigate?

1. Yes the machine was freezing prior to the install of the new harddrive.

2. Upgraded memory to 4GB first - still was freezing

2. Machine is iMAC 8.1 MB325LL

3. Installed a new Seagate 1TB 7200 rpm SATA harddrive

4. It went thru the partioning process fine

Thanks in advance

Seagate make many different drives can you give us the exact model. Take a picture of the drives box or the drives labels if you're not sure and paste it here in a fresh answer so we can figure things out.

I think you'll need to run the onboard diagnostics. Follow this Apple TN: How to use Apple Hardware Test on your Mac. Let us know what it tells you. Clearly you still have a deeper problem.

Sorry have been on the road and couldn't on the MAC. But I cannot get the diagnostics to run with pressing D or CMD D - is there a way to download and use , or create a bootable disk?

Bummer, so you don't have the grey installation disks then which it the last method. Do you have a second mac system to create a bootable USB thumb drive so you can update the systems firmware? Here's the Apple T/N on upgrading: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers as I suspect your EFI is older.

Did you set the SATA II jumper on the drive to lower the SATA speed?

door

My iMac, Boot ROM version, and SMC version are not listed as having firmware updates available. Since the hard drive doesn't seem to be an issue. what if I put the old hard drive back in - would the diagnostics be on the original drive, or are they only on the original install disks?

At this point I guess thats the only thing left.

1st: Did you had this problem before changing the hard drive?

2nd: If the answer for the above question is NO, than 95% is a hard drive problem.

So you need to change the hard drive.
