Why won't it recognize the internal Hard Drives?

I have tried 6 different Hard Drives in this G4 but they won't even show up to do anything with them,( install system, or anything else.)

However it will run from an external drive.

Have you tried both drive bays? The machine will hold four drives.

Try not to lose your head over this yet.

Yes, I have 3 drives in it now, one was taken out of another G4 I have and had a system on it, it booted once with it, then the next time disappeared. I put in another without a system and tried to install one, it failed saying there was a problem with it. I thought I would erase it and try again, when i did it disappeared also.

help me out please.

What was the problem? What are you installing from? What system? Did you format the drive first?

don't have any experience with this type of machine, but just wondering, if, because it WILL run on an external, isther a controlpanel button/switch (software digital/physical) that defaults to internal or extrernal harddrives ??? -like you get asked sometimes, which drive do you want at the beginning of, say, an upgrade, when you put a disc in and you can choose which drive from the dialogue box that shows up???

I'm not expert whatsoever, but it sounds like your issue lies with the disk imaging hardware, or disc imaging reader within your internal hard drive ports.

But your USB ports work just fine hence the ext hard drive is functional.

'deep reset' ???? - I think the G4's still have that available - though youy've probably already tried it!!! - start her up holding down the power button but wait til after the 3rd 'bing' then release .....~ its been a while so I don't remember if thats exectly how it goes ........ but the 'deep reset' certainlgy used to solve some G4 issues

..and of course that particular formatting may only apply to internal, not external, hard drives

sorry, I've just remembered that those hard drives can only be formatted form a similar drive !!!! - that was part of the problem - but still haven;'t yet recollected the rest and am busy trying to fix a late 2006 imac at moment in this hot Perth (Western Australia) Summer :)

ok ;( it is a pain indeed :)

Well, maybe either its the connection between the internal hard drive and the logic board - or….somewhere I remember with G4's that some hard drives have to have a really particular type of formatting - for some specific machines -- I honk it only went for a few models. I got caught once and learnt about it but now have forgotten - so check specs again for the formatting of the hard drive…maybe :)
