Hi there,
I have an iPhone 5 which won't charge due to sea water damage; i.e. it is not recognising the Lightning / USB Connector for charging or data transfer...
Is there a way to copy the data from the device by removing the internal hard-drive from the device please?
i.e. Similar to connecting a 2.5 or 3.5 HDD to a caddy?

Are you trying to get back photos? If you left iCloud on, there is a chance that photos were backed up online. http://www.icloud.com is where you can check. You will need your Apple account/iCloud login to check.

That device does not have a hdd, assuming you are actually talking about the iPhone 5. The storage chip is soldered directly to the motherboard, and removal is very difficult. Even if you could remove it, reading the chip is also very difficult. There are other solutions to remove data though, and it is sometimes possible to fix the whole phone. Adding to Georges comment, great comment by the way, iPhones have a nand flash as their storage chip, basically it resembles ssd for computers. You can take if off and read it on certain programs but, as suggested by George, its not the easiest task in the world. I would recommend letting a professional do a data recovery service for you instead. This would involve getting the device up and running just enough to retrieve data.

It is NOT possible to read anything from it as opposed to other people here have said. You can dump data from it but it is pointless because all the file system data is encrypted. You cannot decipher it so what is the point?

Hi all,
Many thanks for all the answers, very much appreciated!
I took my iPhone to a local tech having compared the price of replacement Batteries & Lightning Connector / Headphone Jack on eBay (sorry iFixit you understandably won't ship batteries to Australia)!
To answer one or two of the questions. Yes, I mainly want to get contacts and photos & video from a recent trip where the water damage occurred :-(
Upshot is that a replacement battery bought the phone back to life complete with data intact, but the charging port wouldn't charge, even with replacement parts!
Therefore, I'm taking the advice to backup to iCloud ASAP & hopefully then restore to a new phone.
The tech has promised me a fully charged replacement battery, which should be ready later today, so fingers crossed!
Thanks again everyone, some great advice on here, a& I'll have a go at rescuing the handset myself based on some of these teardowns and replies, after I get my data off or course ;-)
