Humming noise when in use. Temporarily removed by bending body.

Hi guys, for more than a year now I have this weird humming noise coming from my laptop. The sound is only heard when the laptop is in use. When I close it or shut it down it stops. I tried to clean the fans from dust, but (after 6 years of use) there was hardly any to clean.

Strangely when I bend the body of the laptop, the noise goes away for a short time. Sometimes the bending trick only reduces how loud the noise is.

It sure does sound like the fans are scrubbing against their case, but it might be something else. When I put the laptop under heavy load (gaming, you tube, etc) the sound is not influenced. The noise of higher spinning fans is heard of course additionally to the humming.

I made a video so you can get a better idea of whats happening:

@kunstbanause , Benjamin, Just a thought, make yourself up a stethoscope with a couple feet of plastic/rubber hose to see if you can isolate exactly where the noise comes from eg. fan, hardrive, power supply,etc.. Hold the one end of hose to ear and move the other end to different location of computer.

I'd remove the fans and check the fans vents first. Are you getting a lot of beach balls?

I would recommend you install a thermal monitoring app like this one: TG Pro so you can see whats happening with your systems temp and it's fans. I suspect one of the fan bearings is giving out. You should be able to figure out which one is failing by looking at the tachometer levels.

Hi Dan, thanks for your reply. I monitored the fans and temperature and they seem fine: Both fans with 2000 rpm at idle load; ~50 degree Celsius at idle .

OK, lets carefully disconnect one of the fans is the still connected fan making the excessive noise? If not reconnect the fan and disconnect the other. Don't run the system this way to long. Are you able to isolate which one?

Do make sure you remove any fan over-ride software too as its just not a good thing.

Remove the bottom case and check the fan. It could be just clogged with dust. Clean it thoroughly and try it.
