MacBook Pro A1286 doesn't turn on

Hey guys,

a friend gave me a MacBook Pro A1286 to check. I cannot find a Serialnumber on it, so I can not say what year it is, should be 2008-2012. Probably 2008 or 2009 as the 320 GB HDD got a production date of 11/08.

At first my task was only to replace the battery, which died after a few minutes. But when she gave me the laptop she added that it doesn't turn on at all since two days ago.

When I plug in the power supply (not the original one) the indicator turns green immediately or sometimes nothing happens. I don't know if it's just the combination of a maybe dead power supply and battery or if there can be more issues on the mainboard.

Can anyone give some advice?

Thanks in advance!

What happens when you press the battery checker which is on the side? Do the LED's all light up?

door

Good Idea! With power supply plugged in: 1 green light flashes / no power supply attached: nothing happens

After I did this, the indicator on the charger switched to amber. It didn't do that before! Maybe it charges again now. I'll let you know!

Try an SMC reset: Connect the power adapter to the Mac. On the MacBook / Pro's keyboard, hold down the Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power button at the same time. Release all keys and the power button at the same time – the little light on the MagSafe adapter may change colors briefly to indicate the SMC has reset.

Nothing seems to happen when doing the SMC reset procedure as you described it. MagSafe adapter LED is green again, can't bring it back to amber at the time. Still when I press the battery indicator it gives me 1/8 green flashing light (flashes 3 times).

Without a firm idea which model it will be difficult to aim you to the correct guides and/or part which need to be checked or replaced.

Are you up to opening your system? Do you have the needed tools?

Here's a useful Apple T/N: How to identify MacBook Pro models

If you can at least pop the bottom cover you should be able to identify which model you have from the MLB number located in the memory interface.

Found a hidden sticker next to the battery:

Nothing helped so far unfortunately. Battery connected or not. Power supply connected or not. SMC reset did not help. Still sometimes got a green, sometimes an amber and sometimes no indicator of the Magsafe connector.

Can I measure the voltage on some points? Should the Magsafe PS for example give me something on the multimeter?

I had a couple of those old mac books given to me a few yrs ago one was junk and the other had the turn on problem and it was a HD prob if you have another drive that works in another mac with M. lion or earlier on it swap it in and try a start, some times a second prob can happen like a bad drive. check on the model year of yours and OS it can run. That is what worked for me. Also pull the back and ck for signs of corrosion or loose connections.

Thanks john.

I installed a Fusion Drive on that machine myself. So it's not only changing the HD. Maybe I can easily disconnect the HD placed at the superdrive and use another HD in stead of the SSD. I'm working tomorrow - so I will take a look next week.

Ok. All took off all old stuff - a new (old) drive with 10.11.6 in. No changes. Same as I answered to Dan (who's messages are no longer shown, don't know why). A dead machine.

The reason your answer is gone is I moved it to its own question! System not responding, Battery is good. Your story was just getting to long and was distracting from the original posters issue.
