Rear casing is magnetized, Is this OK?

Recently purchased the 10.1 inch Galaxy Tab A (SM-T580) for use with music. Placed it naked on my metal music stand (no case for it yet), and tablet stuck to it like glue. Same thing with paperclips etc. I went to Best Buy and sure enough, the same effect happened on their display model. There seems to be magnetic areas around the perimeter of the casing. Contacted Samsung support and they seem oblivious and want me to send to a Samsung service center (heck, I'll just return to store if I wanted to).

Everything seems to be working fine and I like what I bought, but I am concerned that the magnetic issue will be a problem in the future.

If anyone else noticed this about this same model (black)? Should I worry?

Thank for any help.

Vincent

I am wondering the same thing. I can't find any answers.

door

My tab a also does this. Wondering if it was meant to?

door

I did exactly the same thing, stuck to my music stand, side of fridge, filing cabinet etc. Called Samsung Support and they said 'Magnetic?'

It seems to work OK and the magnetic case I got for it works exceptionally well, I try not to put my wallet on it or put it near anything else this might be erased just in case.

door

Lol im so happy this is happening to other people. Lol it's awesome for watching movies, just magnet it to my fridge by my bed. Im just concerned itl have side effects

Maybe that is why one of this case's features is magnetic on off. I wonder if I looked around the Tab settings it would have a way to turn it off.

The magnetism is by design. It is for the case, and likely an auto turn off to the screen when the case is closed. If you have old tech around, don't put it on audio cassettes, VHS tapes, hard drives, and floppy disks.

A static field magnet will not damage VHS/Hi8 tapes, HD or FD. An alternating magnetic fielt (transformer, electric motor or anything AC coupled) will however erase magetized media like tapes and HD.

a static field will absolutely damage magnetic strips, it won't erase ur data but it'll "flip a bit" or make it distorted enough it wouldn't b able to read it alternating just gives u alot better of a chance of it happening

@vinfin this is intentional. The back of the case is slightly magnetic - the optional Book Cover attaches that way. Not sure why Samsung support is not aware of this. Magnetism will not negatively impact the function of this tablet.

Samsung seems to go downhill quick since last summer. Struck by bad decisions and bad designs.....Lets hope they will recover from this.

door

Samsung tech support is outsourced to call centre's. They know bugger all apart from the basic tech specs and troubleshooting steps. Outside of that they book a repair.

Since using my Samsung galaxy, my fingers now tap by themselves while I'm searching etc. My index finger seems to hit the screen without me wanting it to.

I'm on my phone now

I just realized that they did it so you can do selfie pics & watch videos... i.e, attach to the fridge, etc. I saw a commercial sometime back about a phone that does that.

I was surprised when I placed it on top of my deep frezzer and it stuck like glue . I only had it for an hour or so....So I was wondering why. This is no mere light grip...I almost have to pry it off. I HOPE thst this won't cause issues in the near future. THANKS

Yes, it is supposed to be magnetic, mine even with the case. It has not affected the performance as far as I can tell, been this way since I bought it. Some people enjoy it because they can stick to thing's. I like it because it doesn't slide of things. If you come in contact with another magnetic object the screen will go dark it will return to normal after other magnet is removed, I have not seen any damages from this chance happening. Hope you enjoy your tab as much as I do. Oh, Samsung reps don't know either.

The same thing happened to me but I want the magnet for my 2 yr old Granddaughter to stick on her fridge., and it doesn't. I'm wondering if the model number has something to do with it.

***Does anyone know if SM-T290 is the magnetic one? Thanks!

There should have been a warning label to keep individuals from putting the t580 near anyone that has a pacemaker or shunt. I had a family member suffer from cranial pressure as a result of the t580 change the flow rate of Cranial Spinal Fluid. I only realized the magnets by accident after making several trips to the neuro surgeon to correct the shunt adjustment.

My Tab 'A' did not seem to be magnetic in the beginning but it sure is now, and seems to work just fine. I purchased a case that has a magnetic clasp and magnetic area for a wireless keyboard, problem is if i open the case and fold it in half it puts the two different magnets together and then the screen goes blank but it does not affect any other processes. Since it seems to be part of the design as I have read in other posts. I this is ok?

Glad to hear others are noticing this. If it is true that it's meant for remote turn on, that's interesting. My primary concern is that if I didn't know this I may inadvertently place a credit card on top of it and cause myself some inconvenience by having to replace it. I actually noticed it when I found a new zip drive stuck to it.

No. As most computer screens... color and coding can be messed up by magnets. The same is true with portable devices. However some internal damage of your device could be possible. In other cases (pun ended) your device may be safe... ish. The cases we have now do many things so if you bought the case from a trusted company... Apple persay, you should be fine!!

I opened my Tab A and gently pried out ten magnets. it was an easy task wich was necessary to do because I am sure those magnets interfered with my drone’s compass leading to a constant need to recalibrate the drone.

Magnetic behavior started on mine today after 6ish weeks of use. It does not seem to impact performance. If it's an electromagnet powered by the battery then it's a problem.

Magnetic behavior showed up on mine and I think I'll have to return it. I have a pacemaker and magnets can interfere. I prop mine near my chest a lot when reclining. Samsung MUST place a warning on a product if the product contains magnets!

One day after posting this comment, I received a call from my cardiologist that something has gone wrong with my pacemaker. (My pacemaker is constantly monitored through a device next to my bed). I am now waiting to learn more and, obviously, not using my Samsung.

Me too. I have galaxy 10.1 (2016)and came across this site looking for advise after it triggered alarm on my Implanted Defibrillator. I'm going to buy a cover in hope that this will help. Beggars belief. Take care.

You Tube has a video on how to remove the magnets, I reccomend a professional though. Good point about warning label. At first they didn't even recognize there were magnets in them when calling tech support. If you place a magnet on or near the screen it will go black but will vo mb e back after removal of magnet, some cases use magnets to secure the key boards as well so with your condition beware.

Have a great

I too found out that my tab A has magnets and I was concerned too at first but it doesn't seem to be causing any problems so I'm cool with it. But I do agree that Samsung should have put out some sort of warning to be sure that no one with metal in their body or a shunt and or a pace maker run into any life threatening problems.

i bought a tab A 10.1 for my granddaughter for xmas last year and 6 months later in won`t power up. i got it back from her to troubleshoot and it`s dead. while trying to get it running i set it on my coffee table which is glass with a metal frame and sure enough it was sticking to the coffee table. i thought this was odd so i googled it and ended up on this thread. i always heard magnets were bad for flat screen displays.

The magnetism in some models was designed with selfies in mind so you can attach tablet to the fridge or likewise. Unfortunately those of us with internal pacemakers and defibrillators were not considered. There is no mention or warning that comes with the devise. I make a point of keeping the back of the tablet away from me but I have had occasion s when the magnetised back has set the alarms off from my defibrillator to warn of interference from magnets which can interfere with the function and settings of my defibrillator. Samsung are noteable by there absence of concern in this matter.

Does anyone know if the 2019 SM-T290 8” model is magnetic. That's one reason I bought it. For my 2 yr old Granddaughter to stick on her fridge..

I had one and enjoyed that aspect but this one isn't!

I'm wondering why and if possibly mine was a different model number. Thanks!
