Why is my timing chain loose?

I got valve cover off passenger side head and was checking out the timing chain and it was tight. Then turned crank to where timing chain moved about 2" and checked it again. It was loose. Is this normal or do I need to fix something?

@weelee why did you check the timing chain? What are the issues with your Ford? Anything related to the timing going on? How many miles are on your engine?

@weelee , Lee, sounds like you have an issue, could be stretched chain, worn/broken guides, worn timing gears but the biggest issue here is probably a faulty timing chain tensioner, could be a combination of wear on all timing chain components.

Since this is what is known as a interference fit engine, it is best to change all the components and the timing chain and be sure to use the Ford recommended oil in your 5.4L. Check the attached video links, showing tear down, timing component wear and failure. Good luck.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.
