Issues after repair, possibly screen cable related

Hi,

I just recently replaced the ageing battery on my iphone 5 and ever since I've had a couple of issues, please bear with me as i wrote this on different occasions and have just now pieced them together:

Every now and then the phone turned off and wouldn't turn on even when using the power button or doing a hard reset. It would reboot randomly though.

(I witnessed it turning off in an odd way only once, the screen went grey with a few darker lines to the left side and then turned off completely, it turned off more than once but I only saw it do it in such manner that one time, other times it just turned off. Quite a few times I didn't see how it did as it happened whilst in my pocket).

Every now and then the touch screen didn't work properly:

The lock screen froze, did not respond to touch (except for assisted touch to a certain extent, then that froze too) and the buttons didn't work. The audio and screen would still be on and playing but buttons, and touch were unresponsive.

This last one I'm not sure how the battery replacement might have affected but it still started doing so after the swap:

whenever I launched whatsapp the optimizing whatsapp process showed (always reaching 100), other times the screen went completely white, the app didn't respond, the home button worked only to go to the homescreen and didn't allow multitasking.

Lastly, one morning it turned off, and I wasn't able to turn it back on

it finally restarted later that day but soon crashed again and rebooted.

I tried using it for a full day to check and it worked fine nearly all day, I received an email (the phone vibrated, the usual) and when i opened the email client the phone crashed. The screen dimmed, become purple-ish and at the top there was a solid green bar

I tried putting back the original battery and had no issues, everything worked as normal and when i retried with the replacement battery i had problems again within the first half an hour(same as before, screen freezing, rebooting ecc)

I talked to the ifixit support and they sent me a replacement battery, replaced it and everything seemed to work great, no issues with it whatsoever so i suppose all those issues where due to a defect in the other battery(

Finally

I tried out the phone without sim for a while to make sure it worked properly. I didn't notice any major problems (lag here and there but I'm not sure that might be due to the repair). When I actually started using it as a phone again (when I inserted the sim) the crashing resumed, random reboots or complete turn offs, a couple of screen freezes and only one screen turning off leaving a dimmed wake behind it

A couple of days have passed since I started writing this and now it's started to show the problems even when the sim isn't in the phone.

It randomly reboots or turns off completely.

A couple of times i've witnesses the phone rebooting and the screen dimmed whilst still having the page it was last on showing, the top of the screen had a darker

this will probably end up being long, so I'll put a TL;DR at the bottom:

Cases like this are maddening, since logic says that a battery can't possibly cause system lag or app freezing, But when you put in your old battery, everything worked fine. Then the new battery worked fine until you put your SIM in. So you have the charging system, cellular system and operating system all acting up when a different battery is put in.

The fact that all 3 systems are for lack of a better term, being wonky, that leads me to think that the battery is still the most likely culprit. Undervolting or overvolting could cause the phone to do weird things and the cellular system for sure puts a big load on the charging system, which could explain why it worked with the SIM out and not with it in.

But that doesn't explain why the battery would be bad, especially two in a row. Its possible that iFixit got a bad batch of batteries, its possible you got sent a battery that isn't for your model of phone, its possible that whatever reason, the pixies in your phone don't line up just right with the neutrons in the battery and the two won't work well together. In other words, sometimes you just find an oddball phone and oddball part that won't work together, even though they should, for no good reason.

To fix this, double check the model of your phone. Make sure its a 5 and not a 5S or 5C. Make sure iFixit is sending the right battery for your phone. If those all check out, order a battery from a reputable source like wholesalegadgetparts, group verticle or mobile defenders. See if their batteries have different pixies that will line up with your neutrons.

If all that doesn't work, then it could be logic board damage. If the pull tabs on the battery adhesive don't work, then you end up jamming things into parts of the phone that shouldn't have things jammed into them. You can easily knock loose a resistor or cap and not know it. You can do that just disconnecting the battery if you aren't careful. I can't say that I have seen that happen and get your results, but it wouldn't be out of the question.

so...TL;DR: Try a different battery

Hmm, i understand where you are coming from.

the order I sent and the batteries I received are for the iphone 5.

i did notice something when I just checked though, the larger ribbon cable closest to the rear camera (the cable coming from the screen) didn't seem connected properly, could that have been the cause for all this?

It could've also been the cable itself as, when i replaced the battery the second time i heard a worrying noise similar to paper ripping(although it might have been the ribbon cables from the screen rubbing against each other)

lastly I noticed that the black sticker covering the resistors/chips/thingimabobs inbetween the screen connector seemes slightly out of shape

The larger horizontal screen cable is the digitizer (touch screen) one, the smaller horizontal one is for the LCD (screen display).

It is fairly easy for the digitizer one to loosen itself before the metal shield with the 3 screws is put on. So make sure to push it in place with the metal shield when screwing the metal cover on.

I think that might have been the problem, I just put back the old battery and made sure the digitizer was connected, now to see if it exhibits the same symptoms as before

Could the digitizer not being connected properly been the cause of the freezes and reboots?

door

Reboots are not caused by a loose digitizer connection. It is caused by other hardware problems. A bad battery is one of the common causes.

what's the likelyhood of two batteries in a row not working?

I've put back the old battery now and it seems to be working without hitches, but it's too early to say
