Retrieve/reset your apple ID password is the only way.
This is a security feature to discourage phones being stolen, brute forced, hacked etc
You'll still get $10 on ebay for it, they make great paper weights :^)

There are two ways to unlock that phone.
1. Contact the original owner and have them remove the iPhone from their iCloud account.
2. Provide apple with the original reciept for the device that is locked.
Without 1 or 2 the device is iCloud locked and is an expensive paper weight or can be sold for parts.
