Why does my Atari 2600 just show static when turned on?

I rescently came home with my Atari 2600 console and hooked it up to Older TV (manufactured 1996) And it was working, But then my older brother suggest that we hook it up in the living room and play it with the family,so we hooked it up into the TV (LCD HD 1080P TV Manufacured May 2009) and it we turned it on and it wouldnt work, so we took it back down stairs and hooked it up on the older TV and turned it on and it wouldnt work. There was just static when it was turned on.

If you turn your channel on your TV to channel 3, and you hook up the RF connector box to the TV, and you switch it to game, you will get a picture. If not, try Channel 4.

If you still do not get a picture, then something is wrong with the box, or the atari. Usually its the atari... the atari is prone to have the power jack snapping off at the solder joints on the inside of the atari, as well as the power brick dying.

If you plug in the power jack, and you see a spark, then your power brick is fine. You can also test it with a multimeter, the tip is hot, the back of the tip is ground. It should read 9V, 500mAH. If not, then you need a new brick.

If you are getting those readings, and it is not powering on, check to see if the jack is loose when you plug it in. If it is, then all you have to do is open the Atari, and remelt the solder joints on the power jack. You can't screw it up, the joints are HUGE. Just hold the iron on each of the 3 points, wait till you see it bubble, it'll fill in the cracks that formed. Put it together, and your Atari should work just fine.

Assuming you didn't modify the native video connection to the Atari, connecting it to a newer TV should not have produced this. It may just be the bad luck of breaking something at the wrong time. Are you sure your RF switch is set to 'Game'?

Static usually means there's no power at all. A black screen tends to indicate that power is going to the system, but the cartridge isn't being read correctly. Unless the tv itself defaults to black when there's no signal on the selected channel. make sure the cartridge is inserted correctly, that the game switch box (if you're using one) is set correctly and wired properly. Check for a loose power switch.
