Batteries expanding on old MacBooks

I've seen quite a few MacBooks/macbook pros from 2010-2011 with batteries where one of the cells expands to the point of breaking the trackpad. What is the cause of this?

The swelling of batteries usually happens when the laptop charger is constantly plugged into the laptop, this can cause a cell to degrade and release gas inside of its housing, which causes the Battery to Swell :( Yes this will effect the trackpad as the battery presses up against the trackpad up to the point where you can click anymore, but it will not break the trackpad. it is best to remove the battery, and use it with the charger. if you are looking to change the battery look for the model number like A1234. DO NOT poke around the battery.
