MacBook Pro 13" Hard Drive Format and Partion

Firstly, I have read the issues effecting this model and have bought a USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD Cable w/UASP (USB3S2SAT3CB) to transfer data. I had to install Wondershare Data Recovery, but may switch to another recommended free Mac File recovery system, The Wondershare is slowly recovering files, but in the trial version I am only allowed 100MB. Anyways, I have this plugged into my best friend's MacBook. When I access Disk Utility it shows up as ASMT 2115 Media: 500.11 GB Uninitialized - Location: External, Capacity- 500.11 GB, Connection: USB, Child Count: 0, Partition Map: Not supported, Type: Disk, S.M.A.R.T. status: Not supported, Device: disk2

This is all that shows up for external hard drives with no partitions existing. I basically want to know if there is a way I can format this and how (including to create necessary partitions). I tried erasing the disk to no avail. I ran first aid and it shows ok. The hard drive is running and spinning.

Should I try to fix this or just buy a new hard drive?

Thanks

Cassandra

it may be the USB to SATA cable itself. I remember buying a cheap one off eBay to format a new SSD that I was putting in my own Macbook Pro but I kept receiving similar errors when trying to format the new hard drive.

I ended up buying a SATA enclosure which fixed the problem.

Hope that helps
