Logic board GPU test on a MacBook that won't power up.

Good morning iFixit Community. I've been trying to get Apple to cover my logic board replacement under the repair extension program. My model macbook applies and the symptoms I initially experienced (sudden restarts when I plug in external monitor or work in Aperture/Photoshop and computer display shutting off partway into booting) seem to align with specifications for coverage. I kept using it until one day it just stopped powering on.

I've been to both a local shop with an Apple certified tech and the Apple store 3 hours away; the first cited liquid damage which was nonexistent (Apple store genius couldn't find anything) and so I would have to pay $900 for the repair.

At the Apple store, I was told that since the foremost issue was now a power issue, then they could not run their GPU test to verify eligibility for the program, so I would still have to pay for the repair.

What can I do at this point?

I'd like to add to this that to date, Apple store reps have refused to cover the board as they cannot run the GPU test.

Go back to the Apple Store again make sure you get your appointment after 10:00AM on a weekday which is the best time when the store is not as busy. Hopefully you get a different person this time.

Be polite and don't be confrontational! See what this person says. Then if you still can't get anywhere ask to speak with the service manager at this point hand them a copy of the recall notice high-lite the symptoms your system is having.

That should do it. If not you'll need to call Apple to make a case though the call center. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on the phone and again you'll need to push things up the food chain. Don't take no as the answer.

Thanks. I live 3 hours and a $50 bridge toll from the nearest Apple store. Last time it was my mother who was already travelling there who handed them the laptop and I conducted my business with them, politely, over the phone. The technician escalated my case from to a manager and then to an "engineer" (whatever that means). I understand that it may have been easy for them to turn me down as I wasn't present to press my case, and I may have to make the trip myself next.

I'll make another attempt over the phone and press the case with Apple, but I was stonewalled last time with the "we don't do mail-in repair in Canada. There's nothing I can do."

Well the gentleman on the phone was very cordial, and even got me on the line with a manager. Things ended with him saying that there was nothing he could do, as this case had already gone in front of an engineer. He gave me the number for Apple corporate Canada, which it turns out, will only go through to HR and press departments.

So I'm not ever buying from Apple again... neither are my immediate and extended family members, as I'm the one they come to for tech help and advice. Time to find a machine that actually works properly and is supported by something other than a crowd of nincompoops.

Do what Dan says first. Be well dressed and look like a serious businessman.

I'd make that appointment with the manager or someone with the power to actually make disci sons .

If it still fails hand him this and ask for a "Warranty Exception".

That failing, write down in front of him, his name and ask for his Apple Employee number.

Remember this was the result of a Class Action Law suit. Apples lawyers initially beat it even after a "Change.org petition calling on Apple to issue replacements for affected models has been signed almost 40,000 times." http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-201...

"The complaint has also been updated to accuse Apple of taking steps to hide the problems from consumers",

Thank you. I agree, this is something that someone higher up will have to decide, and I will be prepared to waste some time in getting to that person.

I have enjoyed Apple Pro products since 2005, and have been purchasing and recommending Apple, and been directly or remotely responsible for the purchase of at least 3 dozen Apple products since then. I have become increasingly disillusioned with the direction of Apple engineering decisions and hardware reliability. They give credence to the idea that Apple sees its consumer base as sheep. I have already been looking at the Surface 4 for my work, and at this point I may have to start recommending different hardware to my customers.
